Irregular Heart Beat

I was in the hospital for 5 days because my heart rate went up to 170 and my BP hit 165. I was admitted and had lots of test done. I've been told that I have an irregular heart beat but the heart doctor say's that its nothing to worry about and that 1 in 12 people have it. I was put on beta blockers to slow my heart rate down and it continued to climb once I was discharged from the hospital.

The thing that bothers me is my heart pounds so hard even now being on the beta blockers that it's annoying. And I know when it starts up as I can't help but feel it. We have a new home BP machine and it quite often tells me that I have an irregular heart beat. Why is it that the heart specialist thinks it's nothing to worry about when its so annoying. I had a stress test done and was told that I have an irregular heart beat and that my heart rate beats too fast even when I'm resting.

The heart specialist said everything was fine except that my heart doesnt rest enough in between beats what ever that means.

Does anyone have any of these problems and how do you ignor it when it feels like you're heart is going to pound right out of your chest at times.

im on beta blockers also, and i can continually feel my heart beat, too. i also had to stay in the hospital because of a fast heart rate, but they diagnosed me with atrial fibrillation. i think the constant awareness of my heartbeat makes me think that it's pounding, and is a side effect of the beta blockers. i started off on metoprolol, but am now on bystolic, which has a lot less nasty side effects for me.
