I would definately tell the doc that you would like to have a holter monitor put in place on you for at least a week if this is still continuring so that they can read the results and catch the episodes.  Sounds to me like you need confirmation of what is really going on and your parents history with their hearts really don't have anything to do w. you unless it is clot issues or anyone in your family had a heart attack at age fifty or younger.  Your heart is your own just like your fingerprints.  Good luck and have a happy weekend....

We have two weapons against fear, Hannah.  One is knowledge.  It's up to you to educate yourself about this, and I mean really go at with an idea of understanding.  You will have to ask your doctor questions, and you will have to do some reading.

If, after you understand what kind of extra beats and such you are having, you are still afraid and it's interfering with your life, it's time to see a counselor who specializes in treating anxiety.

In the course of a day or night, the normal heart rate changes a lot, depending on what's going on.  During active dreams, it can get up to a pretty good speed, and that combination might have been what has been waking you up.

If you've been to a cardiologist and had an EKG and ultrasound, and your cardiologist found nothing wrong, there is probably nothing actually wrong, especially if you are young.

However, it's a good idea when you see the doc to ASK any questions you may have, like "What are these flip-flops?"  You did use the term 'flip-flops,' and one of the most common, benign causes of that sensation is what are called 'premature ventricular contractions' or just 'PVCs':

You can learn even more about them by typing 'PVCs' into the search box either at this site or using a google search.
