also google on key words "depression QT variability"
more articles will be provided than you can shake a stick at :-)
Itdood - "Recent studies have shown that depression, even temporary, causes changes in EKG, specifically something called QT variability or lengthening which in turn can cause arrhythmias" can you send me where you got that from? that's very interesting to me and would love the info if you don't mind?
Cherrytea - yes I'm on skippinghearts and same name :) I've been there since last July or August, about the same as here - I had surgery last August
Any cell in your heart can become a pacer. Which one becomes the heart's pacer? The fastest one. Hopefully that's always in your SA node but as we all know it's not that perfect.
Without catching it on an EKG I think you'll be hard pressed to determine what's happening based on what you think you are feeling and how others interpreted what they felt and later confirmed on an EKG.
Depression could be an issue here too. If you are feeling sad when you get these, it will only make it worse. Recent studies have shown that depression, even temporary, causes changes in EKG, specifically something called QT variability or lengthening which in turn can cause arrhythmias.
I'm glad you are getting the 30 day event. That will be the start of identifying the cause and getting it fixed.
Lisa i am sorry to hear about your issues, are you the lisa on skippinghearts? i just joined there too, If so I hope your surgery went well, and i will be praying you. my doctor suggested an anti anxiety, so i may try that. I hope everything is well!!!
charity
through surgery I found out I have malignant arrythmia's - a very rare thing that only 1% {per my EP} of arrythmia sufferers have - do I worry? yes, I had a pacemaker/icd put in to help with them and I've been shocked and saved again but I worry more about what happens if my cardiomyopathy worsens like it has before and my heart is too damaged to save; or if my ICD won't fire quick enough or I'm passed out again and it won't fire...
this has been discussed often - stress, anxiety & obsessing over these purple people eaters will only make your symtpoms worse...before surgery, I had over 50,000 pvcs, after surgery no pvc's for 2 days but I started Pac's and still have them, slowly over the past 7 months, I've developed pvc's on a daily basis and worsening to where I was told in Dec I would need another abltion
if you're having anxiety or stress - you may want to ask for an anti depressant that will help you cope - I tried Lexapro, but it didn't work well so I'm going to try something else
whether you have svt, nsvt, vt, vfib, afib etc there's no easy way to deal with these dreaded things, you have to find what works for you in dealing and coping with them...
last night I went to bed early because I didn't feel well, laying there I started getting pvc's like mad - then an intense burning, swelling in my chest - for 3 minutes I breathed through my nose only and exhaled through my mouth slowly - what this does is help get oxygen rich blood through your body, besides a calming effect - it worked and helped me calm down enough to sleep
thank you! so i went to my cardiologist and he told me that i do have a slight mitral valve prolaspe, and gave me a thirty day event monitor. He really thinks its svt, and i only worry that its vt because to me that seemed like the worst case scenario when i was reaserching and being the worry wort that I am began immediatly obscessing about it. I am hoping i will have another episode while on this monitor and get to the bottom of all this. its such a drag and depressing! how do you cope accepting that there could be a real problem is really getting me down. that info really helped thank you!
I've had alot of diffferent rhythm problems over the years, with alot of different heart things going on. I've had VT off & on for for the past year (non sustained & sustained) and what you described doesn't sound like what I've experienced, but we all experience things differently, so I'm not alot of help there.
Since you were dx with SVT, did your doctor say anything about pvc's or VT also? Why are you worried your SVT is really VT?
I would get a copy of my tests; so you will know what's going on and ask questions you need to know from your dr and def ask for that monitor, hopefully stress test, echo or holter monitor will help find your problem.
You may want to post the same question on Skipping hearts [dot] com website there and ask the same question; I've gotten alot of help there also.
This may be some useful information for you:
"Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) is an abnormal fast heart rhythm that starts in the upper chambers, or the atria, of the heart."
"PAC's are a type of premature heart beat, irregular heart beat, or benign arrhythmia which starts in the upper two chambers of the heart. These beats are not as serious as PVCs and usually require no medical care. Individuals with this condition may report feeling that their heart "stops" as a symptom."
"In rare cases PAC's can trigger a more serious arrhythmia such as an atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation. This is seldom seen in a healthy heart but if it does happen medical attention should be sought to see what caused the problem and what steps can be taken to fix it."
"PVC's are premature heartbeats originating from the ventricles of the heart. PVC’s are premature because they occur before the regular heartbeat. PVC’s without any other electrical or structural abnormality are of virtually no diagnostic nor prognostic value at all. They occur in everyone in various sorts of patterns, and again, absent any structural or neurocardiological disease, they have no real meaning."
"V-tach or VT is a tachycardia, or fast heart rhythm, that originates in one of the ventricles of the heart and can be either non-sustained (NSVT) or sustained VT (but not abbr SVT); which can lead to V-Fibrillation."
NSVT is one of the most common problems encountered in modern clinical cardiology; but a poorly misunderstood arrhythmia - it's three or more consecutive ventricular beats at a rate of greater than 120 beats/min with a duration of less than 30 seconds
Rapid ventricular rhythms are more serious than rapid atrial rhythms because they make the heart extremely inefficient. They also tend to cause more severe symptoms, although generally considered to be among the life-threatening abnormal rhythms, benign forms of VT do exist.
And I am glad to hear your problems have been resolved!!
Thanks, yes I thought that vt couold happen
To anyone too, my pcp thinks thhat I worry
To much and is very laid back. But I am going
To my cardio monday to get a monitor so hopefully
This will get figured out. But since you had v tach,
Mabey I could explain my episodes to you
And you could tell me if you think this sounds
Like v tach. Ok soo I have had three of theese
Episodes. Two of them started with a pac, or
A skippy feeling that immediatly went into a heart rate
So fast I was scared to take a pulse, one lasted an
Hour and then broke on its own, the other lasted
About fifteen minute and broke by doing the vasal or whatever
There called manuvers. The third one though was different
And began with a prolonged series of what felt
Like rumbling and skipped beats, probable for about thirty
Seconds and then took off into the extreemly fast heart rate
This oneasted about fifteen mminutes and broke
Doing the vasal manuvers. During all three
I experienced a slight feeling of light headedness
And some sob, and some tightness in my back.
Does this sound like how vt feels for you?
I worry a lot my cardio seems to think that
It is svt but it has not been caught on monitor
So I worry. Thanks to all of you for your comments! Mabey
Someone reading this with svt, does this sound
Familar? Your comments help a lot thanks!! :)
I suffered from a-fib, a-flutter and the occasionaly sustanied VT or v-tach. Your PCP doctor is incorrect with saying a "healthy" person does not get VT. I did. I could tell the difference between my a-fb and VT. During my VT attacks, my heart rate was much, much faster, I could not breath, and would always eventually pass out. I am happy to say that I no longer have these issues. I did have an ablation for both a-fib and a-flutter back in Jan. 08, and so far, so good. I was put on a 60 day event heart monitor and that is where my v-tach was caught. So hopefully soon you will get some answers from your monitor. Take care, I wish you well, and wish you enough...
http://www.skippinghearts.com/articles/ its`s great site :) thanks for sharing with us
Hopefully someone else with more knowledge than me chimes in here, but I thought VT could happen to anyone, but less likely in a "normal" heart...hmmm I need to do some more research.
good that you're having a monitor, hopefully they find what's going on
Thanks I am going to my cardiologist monday to get a heart
Monitor. But my PCP at least assured me that
It is not vt I am having, as that does not
Occur in otherwise healthy individuals,
And thanks for the refferal to skipping hearts
It is most helpful. I am new to this and really know nothing
About svt. And every little piece of info
Is much apreciated.
oh I forgot to add - skippinghearts [dot] com has a great heart terms glossary that explains things in plain english and has some very useful information and articles for arrythmia's that you may want to browse about pac's, pvc's, svt & vt
maybe ask for a monitor to record the events you're having - hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will know what all they're called
The ones I've heard of are - 24 hr holter monitor, 72 hr monitor, 30 day monitor and the king of hearts but not sure what that entails
