varapamil

My wife has a history of Raynauds disease. Her fingers will get ice cold and sometimes have pain. I took her to the ER 2 wks ago and they gave her varapmil and within an hr she had a stroke. Ive searched everywhere to find an answer to this but can varapmil cause a stroke in a person who's blood pressure and all vitals are normal. Should they do lab work when entering the ER with these symptoms. The cardiologists tells us that if they did lab work that night they would have found out that she had a heart attack just 3 days before....Any help would be appreciated...Thanks

i hope someone can help me. 9 months ago i had some chest infections and tonsillitis and ive had a numb feeling under my left breast and palpitations daily since then. I have been to a+e a few times, had a 24hr holter, a heart scan, stress test and lots of blood work done, all proving normal. Im a 42yr old female who presumed my symptoms where hormonal. I had another bad episode last night, chest banging all night, nausea and sweating,  my tongue is blue too! Went to my gp who said, your heart is fine and so are your hormones take verapamil and live with it! I hope someone out there can help me understand why im feeling like this. Thanks for reading.

I have experienced the opposite of Raynaud's,  however the mechanisms are similar.  I have erythromelalgia.  What other symptoms does your wife have?  After a long time trying to find out what was wrong with me, I tested positive for Lyme disease.  I recommend watching a movie trailer called, Under Our Skin.  The movie is currently out right now but at only a few select theatres.  It should be on DVD soon.  I have seen it, and it is very enlightening.  If she has other symptoms, i.e., severe joint pains, headaches, fatigue, migrating arthritis, muscle weakness, etc. you need to see this.  You can type it in the search engine.  It should pull up right away.  Since I did not have EM previously, I knew it was secondary and I am of the opinion that there is something causing this and physicians need to find out what that something is.  Lyme disease can be misdiagnosed and often is.  Common misdiagnoses are Lupus, RA, SLE, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, MS and mono.  In my case, it was misdiagnosed as mono.  The downside is Lyme is a very political disease right now and changes I hope are in progress with the CDC.  See ILADS for accurate information on Lyme disease.

I also have Raynauds and calcium channel blockers are an excellent line of defense in treating it. I doubt that the hospital staff could have known that she had an MI a few days before. Did she go to ER because of her Raynauds flaring up badly? Or was it something else bothering her? Generally when we go to ER they focus on just the complaint presented. They don't usually do a full workup/physical.

I've never heard of a CCB causing a stroke (have you checked the information about side effects?). I'm guessing the stroke was tied to the silent heart attack she had a few days before, a small bit of clot dislodged and traveled to the brain. Once they have her stabilized and do more testing, then ask the doctors what they think happened. They'll know more.
