Taking Viread & drinking alcohol

Hi,

I have a friend who is infected with Hepatitis B from birth. He's 32 years old right now and just started taking Viread for the first time this year. My friend takes the pills everyday and he doctor says that his viral count is very low. However, my friend drinks a little wine every week, but still sometimes will go binge drinking with lots of liquor, until the point that is almost blackout drunk.

My question is, despite having a low viral count and taking Viread- is he still at risk of worsening his condition? I'm so worried.

Thanks.

All the comments here are spot on. You're friend not only needs to cut back severely, but needs to quit cold turkey! Alcohol is bad for anyone with a liver disease, especially this one.

I've had 2 doctors tell me otherwise. The first was a GI doctor who told me "You can have a beer a day and you'll be fine."

The next was my current doctor who told me "If it's a special occasion, you are ok to drink 1 or 2 even on this medication...... but I'd reccommend not drinking at all."

I choose to not drink any more. I've had many opportunities. When asked, I just tell them "Doctor asked me not to drink for a bit" and people understand.

alcohol is bad for the liver regardless of hep b. alcohol is like adding fuel to the fire if you have any liver condition. you seem like a good person, worrying for your friend. hope he listens. good luck
