Antibiotics on S+O Tx?

Hi, all.

I'm on Sovaldi + Olysio for another two months. I just had a tooth break off, a decayed upper incisor. The nerve is exposed and it's painful. I'm going to have to go to the dentist right away, and he'll probably want to either do a root canal job or extract the root. For both of those procedures, antibiotics are usually prescribed.

I checked the drug interactions for Sovaldi and Olysio on their Patient Information sheets. On the Olysio PI it says to avoid taking Erythromycin and derivatives. Azithromycin, which is what I normally take during dental work, is made from Erithromycicn, according to Wikipedia, so I probably shouldn't take it. But I've have trouble (serious gastrointestinal problems) with the alternative antibiotic, Amixicillin.

Does anyone here know about this stuff. like what antibiotics it would be safe to take? This is a serious and urgent problem for me.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Mike

Hi Mike I am so happy that your dentist was able to do the work without antibiotics.  I also think it is a good idea to find out what works with the treatment.  I was trying to think of what I took during tx when I had to have dental work.  I used penicillin but that was a different tx.
The drug interaction checker showed no interaction.
It did show with clarithomycin, Biaxin, Amoxocillian, it said it could increase the amount of drugs in your body.

Again, I am so happy that you were able to get the tooth treated.  I hope you are feeling ok this morning.

Oh and Respiratory issues can appear while on S/O if you are already susceptible. I'd tell my doc about the cold. Could be from the meds. I breathe much better now EOT S/O. The first question Doc asked me at 4 weeks tx was about my respiratory. I guess their radar is out for that.

Penicillin works for me. The other stuff is not so good. If I was desperate and on S/O I'd take penicillin. I'd try going without anything at first and using a good mouth rinse maybe a sea salt rinse like in the old days. When a month passes you will be in a new phase of treatment. You'll feel it. Then you can decide.

Hi there Mike.   You may want to ask your Hepa or Gastro that question as these drugs are so new, and speculation could effect SVR.  Your dentist hopefully can get you thru this without antibiotics, but in the event you should need them you should get that info just in case.
Good luck with Tx, and hope that lousy tooth gets fixed!

Problem solved. My dentist said he will do the root canal job without antibiotics.

I was a little worried because the antibiotic I usually take for dental work, Azithromycin, is a derivative of Erythromycin, which is on the Olysio drug interaction list as a no-no. And the alternative, Amoxycillin, causes me intestinal problems.

Gee, being on Tx is difficult. And wouldn't you know that right away I'd catch a cold and bust a tooth. Sheesh!

Hey, Mike, I have taken Keflex and penecillin both with no problems, BUT not on Tx meds.  I agree with Dee, check with your pharmacisr - or better yet - call J&J AND Gilead!  They should be able to e specific and to reccommend an alternative if one is better.

Good luck and good health!  Pat

Hi Mike, I am so sorry to hear this.
I found this RX checker to see if I could find an antibiotic.  I remember taking Keflex for a tooth problem.  While the checker said no interaction it also said to check with your doctor or pharmacy, I also checked penicillin there was no interaction noted.

If I were you I would call the pharmacy.  They seem to obtain the interactions sooner than the doctors.  At least in my case that was how it happened.

Good luck, Dee
