BMS790052

I'm at week 19. A SVR at week 12. Food makes me nauseated as of the last 6 weeks. Are there foods that you should favor to help curb the feeling or is there something else you can do? Also in this clinical trial with BMS 790052 plus interferon and ribavirin what particular side affects do I have to look forward to? A few days it felt like I had the bends, way more intense than flue like symptoms. After I split and stacked a truckload of alder into my wood shed the other day, I was out of it for 2 days. Body and head ache. Why does physical activity bother me so much?

Hey I'm back., but off to Mex. Fri the 11th.   Saw my trial nurse and Dr. yesterday. I have been getting a VL test on every visit but the trial only allows you to see week 12 results. and week 24. BMS will determine if I continue TX by the week 4 and week10 VL results, after I reach week 24.and I'm still UND.  I guess those are the predictor weeks. My trial drug may have been changed, but we don't know at this point. I was told that the virus could mutate with prolonged use of BMS790052 so a heavy dose may not be better. It's a trial and I'm the guinea pig. It's all a bit confusing.????? I am only told something if I specifically ask about it..
I'm getting my strength and stamina back. Getting carpentry work done around home. Worked pretty hard today and don't feel too bad.  I still have nausea when I eat. Loosing my gut from not eating much. That is a plus with this rat poison. There is not too many pluses at this point in Tx. Hope it works!
My main fishery is red sea urchins, although I have fished about 7 different species, by dive.  Green sea urchin, octopus, abalone, scallops, geoducks and sea cucumbers.  I pretty well missed this season but hopefully I'll get off these drugs in Mar. and get out there for the tail end of the fishery in April. I don't dive commercially dive anymore, just run the boat. . .Last season I think I averaged between 3,500 and 4,000 lbs. a day. The boat averaged about $.65 / lb. way down from previous seasons. That's with one decent diver. We used to get $1.00 / lb, around Xmass with $.85 the rest of the season. Now, we have to compete with cheap product from Russia and Chile, plus shaky world economy... low demand... not good. Our fishery is sustainable, taking %2 of the biomass annually. Last two years we left %60 of our total allowable catch on the bottom, because of poor market demand of Canadian Product. Oh well, When other countries rape there resource and have nothing left, we'll be laughing. Might take a while though.
Can hardly wait for my first plate of pescado, mojo de ajo, even though i probably won't be able to eat much of it.
Hope all's well with you!     Pedro

Really glad to hear the great news on your being able to eat again and that the ginger , chicken soup is helping , I also use pork and sometimes beef in the soups with allot of veggie's and noodles ,.... important to keep the protein intake up ... it really ***** not be able to eat .....

And don't forget the daily water intake , listen to your body .. don't force the water is what most folks say,,, being in the tropics helps me with this one ,,,, in cold country taking 3 liters a day .... hmm ....

Platelets rising is also good news .. mine are and have been below normal after starting & this is one factor I think adds to the lack of power, stamina ... not enough O2 in the system ,so ya Pedro , you got it .. Pace your self in your projects ... you'll be ok !

A desk job ?? ha ha ha .. ya sure !!

You should feel much better when these drugs get out of your system .... hope you only have to do 24 wks Tx ! When do you find out that news ?

My wk. 12 shot is this tmrw , then wait a week , ck. RNA VL & wait for the report & then make the decision on wether to continue or stop Tx .... hoping for UND like you , if not ,difficult choice as I do have a response ... but, too many factors to think about, adds to my headaches , just gonna wait and see

Thanx for the sockeye link , interesting read and really great news !

How was your daily haul this year ?
What else are you fishing / diving for ?

The last time I fished commercially, was years ago in Micronesia, west pacific, we didn't have the challenges of the First Nation's bs of course ! ! Had others, like being in typhoon alley!!

At that time, in the season  .... I was getting, lowest prices , $.50 for Marlin over 300# , under 300# - $.75 ... the lowest $$ fish of all , and a by catch of YFT (good $$ if they were there) ..... $1 a pound bottom price for Dorado during the season, the major yearly target & a 4-5 month season, and had runs of yft, bonito, marlin , wahoo at different times of the year + some deep bottom fishing in summer when conditions let me ...
Some good years , some bad ... lot's of fun and $$ when the boat ,weather conditions & fish cooperate , and, hell when they don't ... that's fishing for a living.

Best results , Aaron

P.S. ,  your hair should grow back after the drugs clear out of your body , according to many of those who experienced the same temp loss !

Good Morning.... Just saw my family Dr.    Very encouraging . I'm all pumped up!.  He thinks I'm on BMS790052 but you don't know for sure at this point.   You are right about not receiving certain info in a CT. My blood work shows slightly below  normal, but not terrible. Platelets at 88, up from 50.   I feel like I'm on the mend!..........today!    I've got many projects I would like to do around home while I'm not working. I just have to remember to pace myself. I'm pretty sure I could do a desk job though, but that's not going to happen. . ... The sockeye returns were downgraded to 34 million. Still phenomenal. The local natives [First Nations} always get priority for "Food, Social and Ceremonial purposes" as if they use 40 lbs. a day, for every man, woman and child, 365 days a year. Then others get to fish. A lot of controversy there. Non Natives and other native fisherman from different bands, have been allowed to fish only a few days a year because of very poor runs, for many years. It has been dismal, in the recent past. The price varies directly with the quantity available. http://www.salmonaresacred.org/2010-sockeye-return              All's well,    Take Care ,  Pedro      p.s. GINGER works for me.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO ON EATING!!   Abbreviations , Terms, Travel, etc. Very much appreciated.  This last week has seen a big learning curve for me.   It seems the side affects come and go. Five hours after I started Tx I started to feel real weird, woozie, sickly. That has not left me. The first side affect was Very dry skin over my whole body and "PCT" small water blisters all over my fore arms and hands. After a shower I would covered my whole body with moisturizing cream, Even my butt felt like sand paper. That lasted about 4 weeks  then slowly went away.It could of been from not drinking much water.Only 2 or 3 glasses a day. My Trial nurse told me, after she was at a liver conference last fall, that something in coffee and vitamin D helped with the cure. So I have 3 or 4 cups of dark roast, organic, every morning, and 800 or 1600 iu of Vitamin D a day Lately it's been nausea, but with your advice it has greatly abated. Only slight today. I  never scrimp when it comes to buying  good quality foods. I also have a 6,000 sq. ft. veggie garden a fruit orchard and do some canning.   I really do not want to put another drug..... anti nausea pill in my body, if I can help it. Hopefully nausea will go away if I pay attention to my eating. Ginger, home make chicken soup. yogurt and grapes,.crackers.Yahoo!    Now my normally thick head of hair is getting pretty thin. Nobody as mentioned it to me except my girl friend, so it is not that noticeable. Normally after 6 weeks without a hair cut I start to look like a shaggy buffalo. Six weeks has come and gone and I still don't need a hair cut. It doesn't bug me in the least, but I was wondering , will it grow back? I'm sure the answer is here somewhere.  OZgirl.... In this study VL tests are done every 12 weeks. They take about 8 viles of  blood, every visit. Visits are every two weeks for the first 12 weeks then every 4 weeks after that. I could be finished at week 24. I'll find out in March. The addition of BMS790052 has similar side affects, in humans, has RBV/INF alone   except the number of adverse affects were higher in patients at week 12. Animal studies showed "abnormalities in the liver and the bone marrow which is important for making blood cells, immune cells and platelets, which help with wound healing." It's being studied So I'm just a Ginny pig. Hopefully it will be different in humans, but I do have some reservations about BIG PHARMA.............Halliburton is owned by Bristol Myers Squibb......Remember  "Don't eat PHARM FISH"                 Adios Amigos,  Pedro

A patient getting info about the results of other test subjects in their CT's from nurse's or doctors ... well  ... that probably isn't going to happen ..... and,

Maybe they took blood @ Wk. 4 to monitor other LFT's , RBC ,WBC etc..... did the VL test and just don't want to tell you this info because it is a Double Blind CT ...... so they let you know at wk. 12 that you were UND and would not be dropped from the study ....

Still great news !

If the link below is your study ... I'm sure it is cause I went to BMS website (2nd link below)  ... then to the clinical trials site , (1st link) .... you can read the the focus of the CT ... for more info overload ... )

Great news about the Sockeye run last year ! ... like to hear that ! What was the avg. price in the past for gill netters in your area ? $0.80 /lb. sounds pretty fair price for a run that strong .... but,  how are the reg's there nowadays ?

hey Pedro,
So happy for you that your trial's working!
i was offered that BMS trial last year here in Oz....it was at a different hospital and my Specialist kind of talked me out of it.... wish I'd gone on it, sounds good.
Oh well,  I'm hoping to go on a double oral one, I'll see my Doc soon.Hope i can get on it.
Can i just offer some advice, I think water consumption is SO important to keep sides down,
and eating good healthy food, small amounts ,often, kinda graze if you can.Yogurt, nuts stuff like that. I had ginger tea, that helped, and perscription anti-nausea drugs. can you ask the clinic nurse for some?
Good luck with it all, and have a great holiday!

Hi     Looking at the consent form I had to sign before starting this trial. It has,,, Protocol Number, A1444010.......  Study Sponsor, Bristol Myers Squibb...... Study Title, A phase 2b study of BMS-790052 in Combination with Peg-Interferon Alfa a2 and Ribavirin in Treatment Naive Subjects with chronic Hepatitis C Genotype 1and 4 infection.         On the bottom of each page it says, Canadian Version 2,9 June 2010   It also says  there should be apx. 400 participants from... 200 USA,  30 Canada,   also Europe,Mexico, Australia, Egypt.......Google IDEAL STUDY for more info on study findings.  It takes a few years before all the results are published, but my Dr. said, up to a %80 %90- of attaining a SVR with this new drug.     I think there are about 25 people in the study at the clinic I'm going to. We started at different times. They seem reluctant to tell me much about how the other people are doing. One person had to terminate treatment.  I see them again in 10 days for blood tests and get more drugs. I'll pick their brains. ....... Because I'm over 75 kilos I take 600mg RBV AM and PM,  1200 daily    !80 mcg/ 0.5 ml Alfa a2, once a week also either 20 or 60 or placebo of BMS 790052 daily in AM. I have had only 2 VL tests... one at week 0 and one at week 12,  409,000 to UND........40 Million sockeye went up the Fraser River last summer. The biggest run since 1913. Gill net fishermen got $.80 / lb.

Can I know what trial number you are in ? From some of the info on BMS-790052 , new & seems it works pretty good ... how many mg dose is your trial arm dosing with ?

Can you get the info on Wk. 4 & 8 VL test ?

She does scoot right along ... She's an old girl .. 1974 Laguna , made by American Marine Ltd. ... wot apx. 20 kts. , depending sea, weather conditions ... my last boat, 8 kts. running downhill with a tail wind .... she was a great work boat too ! I do know what you mean about testing hull integrity & seaworthiness ... not by choice ...

At this time I'm going through the engines .. seemed like the thing to do at the time of starting Tx, as I had a feeling before starting Tx , I might not be able to operate at 100% ... seemed like a good excuse for not operating the boat ... luckily I am not pulling wrenches much ... more finger pointing & trying to control the work .. challenging in a foreign country

Glad to hear there is Sockeye runs still happening ... sounds like good fun !

For now , I'm in pretty much the same condition , reading allot , too much (can you tell), & relaxing as much as possible .... around my engine overhauls ....

Booze hasn't crossed my lips for about 15 years. That's lucky for my liver, in retrospect!  Never did like "to kill ya" much anyway. I'll be away for 18 days. Be back the first of Mar. Doing OK today. Doing nothing but relaxing and reading on the computer, doesn't wear me out.       Once I was skipper / engineer of a 110 ft. sport fishing boat/ floating hotel operation, for well to do tourists. I even did a bit of guiding when the crew was too hung over.   I know what you mean. Some tourists are great! ....   others...WELL. Leave it at that. Don't think I'm cut out for it, but did met some pretty interesting people.   This past Aug. I took out friends and family, sport fishing for sockeye. We sleighed em. What a HOOT. Your boat must scoot along pretty good. Mine only makes 8 knots, on a good day but incredibly tough and sea worthy. I've tested it....not by choice.      Pedro

Glad to share what little info I been forced to #%&^* find out ! !

This forum is ok for a start , but ,remember these are just folks opinions .. no doctors here ,although there are allot of very informed folks ... much more than me ....

And ,ya there's just a little bit more to it than 1 page handout ... just a little bit .... depends how much you want to know ... and that info ain't even close to an exact science .. changing all the time ....

Information overload is very easy to accomplish ... all i can suggest is take your time , try to weed through the bs (takes time and energy) , and remember ....
At the end of the day ... after 6 months EOT VL test , and you are hopefully still UND ... that's about all that really matters ....

maybe because I live in SE Asia , the doc's made sure I vaccinated and boosted A&B as soon as i found out I had this crap .... before tx

Anyways , until your done , remember our systems while under Tx ... and .... for how long after Tx are not normal ... I still make up sashimi with wahoo or yft , but not nearly as often as I used to ...

I run a 38ft. f/g sportfisher , 2 x 3208T's ...  made the move out of commercial fishing years ago & got into taking out the tourist's ... dealing with the public has it's up and downs , but getting tight, putting a youngster on or someone who never caught before .... makes up for the few a**holes .... and I'm not as hungry as I used to be : ) and, I definitely understand what you mean about getting on someone else's boat ... it is ... umm ... ya well .. it's someone else's call and crew ...

Pedro, don't think too much about this stuff ... it will be here when you get back from Mexico ... enjoy your friends company, the beach , nite fishing while you got a chance ... but no  Negro Modelo's or ... Aguave products .....  booze will screw up the work you already put in !

When do you leave & for how long ?

Thanks for the info and advice. I've never talked about hep c with anyone, that had it, til this week, on this site. I've read a bit, only. There is a lot more to it than the one page glossy handout I got before starting Tx. I basically jumped into this blind, like I do a lot of things and I learn as I go.   I'm a bit overloaded with info the last few day but it is good to be somewhat informed.  Could save my A$$.    I got a shot, 12 years ago before I went to S.E. Asia.I did not go back for a" booster ?" like I was supposed to. I think it was for A &B. I'll ask my doc. I've got a 35 ft. f/g commercial dive/fish boat. Flying to Cancun but don't stay there. I have a few Mayan buddies that I sometimes go fishing with, off the beach, at night, with casting rods/poles. Charters are a bit weird for me. I like doing my own thing.     Pedro

Pedro ,

HCT is Hematocrit , it part of the red blood workings ... usually HGB is the indicator of anemia < 10 g/dl ... but if you goggle Hematocrit , low HCT is an indicator of anemia too ...and ya I got low platelets too ....

all this stuff is far from my "normal" world on the water & trying to figure it all out ... is a challenge ... my stamina ... what stamina , power , what power , motivation , what motivation  ... ummm isn't close to what is was before I started Tx , 11 weeks ago ...

For questions to your doctor - you can search that term here , or goggle "questions for doctor for hcv treatment" .... I see you just joined here ,

There are a bunch of really pro sites like AASLD, EASL , CCO , Pubmed , that are really where a guy ought to get info from ... this site is ok , for getting some support and idea's and some valid info , but follow up on the liver sites if you really want more than someone's opinion ....

Seems there can be a bacteria in raw or undercooked shellfish that is not good for folks with liver problems ... it also seems if they are cooked well , there should be no problem ..

Did you get the hep A & B immunization - vaccination shots ??

Here's a few links & there are a bunch more on shellfish & just goggle raw shellfish + hcv ... if these aren't enough for you

http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/idcu/disease/hepatitis/hepatitis_c/overview/raw_oysters/

http://www.americanhs.org/vibro.htm

I got bent in Guam , figure we are lucky to be able to have this conversation , walk etc... wasn't quite so ballsy after that dive ....  a couple of my friends haven't been so lucky .....

What kind of boat are you operating ? Where are you heading to in Mexico ... Fishing on your agenda ?

The bends thing happened for only 1 day and lingered into the next. Thank god. I couldn't find HCT in the list of abbreviations. My platelets were low.I think @ 30. I see my family Dr. next week. I'll ask him about anemia and to explain my last set of blood tests. I'm not sure what questions I should ask him. Could you send me a link about shellfish. I'm off to Mexico soon and I love cocktail de camaronies. Eat sea food every day when I'm there. It ***** to know that when you are hungry and are about to eat something, the result is nausea. Oh well. The first time I was bent was off the N.E corner Anacapa Is. I remember the bottom, like it was yesterday. Lots of Pinks and Greens....Garibaldi's....was pretty That's interesting about raw shellfish. Years ago I ate a few raw oysters and they made my stomach sorta hurt.No PSP. That could of been a clue that I had HCV. ???  Yes my engine room is cramped and I don't intend on going down there till I'm finished Tx.She is tied up, and going to just stay that way.  Pedro

#*%^  ... it felt like the bends ?? !! Been bent & it is really, really ... not a good thing to experience ... that you compare the sides to that ... hmmmm

Do you have low HGB or HCT ? anemia could be an issue ... or .... just the poison we are taking ...

Take care working on your boat ... I don't know how cramped your engine room is , but , busting knuckles with normal skin and hcv ***** , with a skin condition like your pic ... I'd be looking for an alternative solution until that rash lays down ..

I keep pure ginger candy onboard my boat for those that get just a bit sea sick ... it does seem to help some of them calm the stomach , Ginger Tea made from real ginger , not instant , also seems to help some folks settle their stomach's ...

For whatever it's worth , I eat allot of clear broth soups and rice or rice noodles , Whey protein shakes , light meals ...... heavy meals are to hard to handle .. on SOC Tx .....

Make sure the oysters or any shellfish you eat are cooked well done ... if you eat them at all ... I been holding off on shellfish for a while ... there is plenty of info online that explains why with hcv not to eat raw or undercooked shellfish ...

I took that picture of my hand about three years ago.The first time I had hand blisters and swelling, was about 8 years ago. I thought it was just an infection from a few nicks, working in the engine room, on my boat. It is a symptom of HCV called PCT. Porphyria cutanea tarda. "I think BMS790052 is fairly new so there probably isn't too much info out there on it's specific side affects.  I was told it would increase the chances of attaining a SVR  up to %90 for geno type a1. " Anyway, that is what lead the doctors to diagnosing my HCV, after about 3 years of trying to figure out why I would periodically get blisters on my hands. My hands and dry skin are not too bad now. I picked some oysters of the beach today, pan fried them in butter, ate some ginger, veggies and I only have slight nausea now. I think ginger helps .

You split a truck load of alder with your hands in that shape and you're surprised you're tired!?? I'm way impressed - had to go out and buy a splitter this tx as I couldn't remember where I last left the ax, never mind lift it. That rash looks nastier than anything ifn/rbv would do - is that a bms790052 side? I had a rough time with nausea/diarrhea a while back and had to give up one of the meds (alinia) - never really found anything that solved it  but the suggestions on Hector's list helped.

Pedro,

Congratulations on achieving und...I am also in a BMS790052 Study (I was a non responder 8 years ago) and my 12th week lab showed I was und as well.
Also good to hear philbert has seen a dramatic decline...
I'm in my 14th week and so far few and relatively mild side effects. You got good advice already from everyone else...continue to battle through it, you are well on your way.

HCV Treatment Side Effect Management: Nausea & Vomiting

http://www.hcvadvocate.org/hepatitis/factsheets_pdf/SEM_Nausea_08.pdf

Try these simple tips for controlling general nausea; they may also help with vomiting:

If morning nausea is a problem, eat some dry crackers when first waking up and get out of bed slowly
Avoid trigger foods and odors
Avoid spicy, greasy, and deep-fried foods
Eat small amounts of food every few hours rather than 2-3 large meals a day
During periods of nausea, avoid acidic juices (orange, grapefruit, and pineapple); instead try clear juices, ginger ale, chicken broth, herbal tea, or sports drinks
Eat and drink slowly
Eat foods at room temperature (neither very hot nor very cold)
Take over-the-counter medication for nausea as recommended by a health care professional
Try some peppermint, chamomile or ginger tea to help calm the stomach
Try ginger root cooked or raw
Try sucking on ginger candy
Try drinking small amounts of clear fluids (at room temperature)
Try relaxation techniques
Try light exercise
Try acupuncture or acupressure
Try acupressure wristbands

If nausea and/or vomiting doesn’t lessen or if it becomes worse contact your health care provider. There are prescription medicines to help treat nausea and vomiting.

Cheers!

Hi Pedro, Good for you. SVR at wk 12! Wow, you just one the lottery! I'm in same program (790052) at week 14. Recently found I was dectected @ wk 12 but had tremendous VL drop from 9.7 mill to 25<. Will stay on program and watch VL. At 19 weeks and Under, you're moving and groovin right along. You asked what side affects to look for. At week 19 you've probably gone thru the worst of it. I believe riba and interferon to be the biggest pain with its typical sides. Funny you mentioned the bends, I scuba also. Feels more like a giant hangover to me. All extreme excercise takes it out of you. Take it easy and drink tons of water. My nurse says one half body your weight in ounces of water daily. Keep your calories up and eat foods that are easy on body, soups and stews. Greasy, spicy foods bother me the most. Hand in there. At wk-19 and UNDER you're almost home free. Good for you my man. .... Philip
