False positive antibody hep c

What causes false positives on ab tests for hepatitis c?

This is interesting.  I had a false negative in the late 90's which really hurt my liver when the HCV was not discovered until 2007 when I had the beginning of cirrhosis
I always wondered why this happened.  At the time I was told that it was because the test back then was not sensitive enough

Can HIV cause a false positive for this test??

The HCV antibody will often cross-react with other antibodies in the system(ie chickenpox etc) therefore it often shows a "false positive.

If you had a  a low s/co ratio(signal to cut -off ratio) on this test it most often means a "false positive"
