Rash caused by tralaprevir

My father just started the treatment of tralaprevir, incivex and ribavarin. he has a horrible rash all over his body. He has only been on the treatment for four days and is there an end in sight for him with this rash or will it last the entire cycle. He as done treatment before without the tralaprevir. What are some things that will help with the rash and any serious things we should look out for? The doctor said sores and luckily he has none. He is miserable though and I dont know what to do to help.. Suggestions please! We have already used cortizone cream and oatmeal baths.

I got my doc to prescribe clobetasol propionate in a foam called olux-e. The foam makes it easter to spread around.  i think you can get a coupon for it on line that will pay the copay on your insurance but you  have to have insurance to get the extra help with copay.  i have yet to pay out of pocket   you can also get it in an ointment  or creme that if you dont have insurance I think it is fairly inexpensive . called clobetasol propionate 0.05%.  It is a litlte harder to get spread around on large areas but it really works.  I still have my rash but it is not irritated and when an area pops up I just put it on.

Sorry to hear about your fathers side effect of rash. Hopefully his  DR. is keeping a close eye on this. Most often the rash caused by Incivek is moderate and in only 4% of trial cases did the participant have to discontinue because of this.

Very rarely a system ic rash was caused by Invivek ..called "Stevens Johnson syndrome"  it is a serious complication that would necessitate ending treatment....again tho a very rare complication.

Ask the doctor about possibly the antihistamine Atarax for   the rash..it has helped some here.

Good luck

if you haven't already please put in a call to your dad's doctor.   one of our members describes having to use prednisone to deal with a sever telaprevir rash.  if it were me i would want to try the atarax first.  i second the suggestion to have him be seen by a dermatologist.  does your father have fair skin?

Yes, by all means call the doctor and find a dermatologist.   I'm one that not only took oral steroids but a steroid shot as well.  If you can nip it with Atarax before it gets out of hand you will be thankful. It is a struggle everyday for me. Good luck.

steroid use should be minimal dose and short duration for anybody

Atarax will help with the itching but is not a cure for the rash. See a dermatologist that is recommended by the doctor your dad is treating with. You want a derm that has experience with patients treating with these drugs. Hope he feels better soon

Thank you everyone. Sorry I put the wrong shot he is on he is using the pegasys with the incivex and ribavarin. The doctor did say it was moderate and to keep a close eye on it. We have also been refered to a dermitologist but is anyone aware of one in the massachusetts area that has delt with these medications? Thanks everyone for all of your help. I feel horrible for him..

Thanks
