Hepatic Coma

Hello,

My mum has been an alcoholic for years and has been in a coma due to liver failure twice, one 6 years ago and one in may this year, where niether the nurses or consultant thought she would make it out. however her liver regained some function and she recovered.
the thing is she has started drinking again now, i want to know how long her liver will be able to cope with this for before it fails again? im trying to get her to stop but im scared that she may have already damaged it so much, that it may already be on the boudary of failing again as her tummy looks like it may be starting to swell.

can anyone give me some advice??

thank you

I'm sorry to hear about your mother, and you too.Sometimes in life one just has to hang in there - and if you have faith now is the time to use it. I am an alcoholic, sober, and involved with A.A. With that as my credential, so to speak. if your mother is truly an alcoholic - she is the only one to make the decision to quit drinking. I pray you take these times to say or do the things with her that you always wanted. Not handing out a death sentence, but her time here will be limited - make the best of it.

Most of the expertise here is on viral  hepatitis.
If her abdomen his swollen (ascites) it does not suggest that her liver has  reversed all the damage caused by alcohol abuse.
Cirrhotic livers can improve if the alcohol that caused it is stopped ,but only up to a certain point..
The condition of your mothers liver and her prognosis can be established by blood tests and an ultrasound scan.
No one here can tell you whether she is passed the point of no return-only a specialist doctor.can.
Similarly one cannot guess at her life expectancy-if she has been in a coma, that is  usually the final stage.
That's why the medical staff didn't think she would pull out of it.
There are medications for treating the symptoms of ESLD-end stage liver disease.
All of this needs to be discussed with her doctor,
Sorry not to have been more specific.

ahh i hate hearing these stories... unfortunately it doenst sound like she will be around very long if she continues to drink --- cirrosis plus alchol = death... does she also have hep-c??

can you convince her to go to detox/rehab?  if not, there isnt much you can do for her... people have to want to help themselves
