How risky is a Hernia repair with Hep C and early cirrohsis

Hello all,

Well as my partner has just about finished treatment, he now has developed a hernia?  Would this be caused by the hep C? His GP refferred him to the shouldice centre in Toronto for a hernia repair once his treatment is done.  However, the nurse at the liver clinic told him today he better talk to the  Hepa tologist about it as he does have early cirrohsis.  Does anyone know if it is much riskier to have surgery with early cirrohsis - he has no varces or ascites.  Many thanks everyone in advance

I don't believe either the hep c or cirrhosis would exclude him from surgery.  Usually the concern for cirrhotics is that they often have low platelets, which can increase bleeding risk during surgery.  However, not all cirrhotics have low platelets, so as FlGuy pointed out, if pre-op work-up clears him, his liver status is probably little issue.  Good luck to you both.

Assuming he passes the pre-op tests I don't see an issue.  But, I'm a believer in piling unpleaseant things togeter.  That way discomfort and anxiety occurs fewer times rather than consectutive and continuing events.
