Im getting a colonoscopy in 2 weeks. Am worried about use of Propofol as I have sleep Apena. Any comments out there?
Good news Susan Im glad all was ok!!!
Take care,
Charm
This message is a few weeks old, but that's okay. I had the propofol and it worked great! The best news though, is that I didn't have any varices beginning or anything of that nature, so I was thrilled with that news. I do have a hiatal hernia and a couple of other insignificant problems on the colonoscopy part, but nothing to worry with. I'm good now for 10 years unless I have a liver biopsy that shows any progression to cirrhosis during that time frame; in which case if I did, I'd have to have a repeat on the upper endo before that time. I am hoping that I do not progress.

Yes, it is the best sedation there is for any endoscopy procedure - only I had a jerk anesthesiologist who not only brought a CRNA with him (who did nothing) but they both had the nerve to bill my insurance the same amount! The jerk anesthesiologist also began the procedure before my physician had arrived when I specifically asked him to wait. He was mad because he made quite a bit less on this small procedure rather than something bigger where he could charge more!. I'm really down on anesthesiologists - they are typical contract workers - inept, and then they disappear and you can't locate them afterward! Good luck on propofol. In 5 years time, there wont be any use of versed and fentanyl (makes you walk around like a zombie for 12 hours afteward) and everyone will be requesting propofol.
hi susan -
i've had 3 endosocopies (sp?) in the past five years. every time they used versed & demerol - worked like a charm! each time they woke me up after i asked them "did you start yet?"
i was a bit sleepy the rest of the day, but the next day i was fine. good luck with the procedure - cool thing is, is you get results right away!
best,
w.c. missy
WOW glad all that went well! No varices is awesome news!
Sending a hug!
Good to hear, besides for a little acid reflux sounds like your wired pretty good. BTW, did they send you home with them pretty color photos? Always good to show around the dinner table........... Stay well girl
"Mile" should have been "Mike" - in case you didn't know.
Mike
It sounds good so far - especially the "no varices" part.
I wish you the very best.
Mile
Glad to hear it went well. That propofol is wonderful stuff. Please let me know how the biopsy comes out.

I had my procedures today with no problem and the Propofol worked great. No varices, no portal hypertension, which is good news on both fronts. I do have a hiatal hernia, mild inflammation in the stomach with gastritis - which he did a biopsy on to rule out H. Pylori, I had a colon polyp-which he removed and sent to pathology and internal and external hemorrhoids. Now that you know all of the gory details!! I am recovering just fine with some minimal groggyness (which may be more from my 3 hr sleep of last night). I will find out about the biopsy/path. when I go back in for my follow-up appt. But, I'm not really expecting anything abnormal on either.

Thanks everybody, so much. You all are such a comfort and a blessing. I forgot to mention that yes, I am having the double procedure with the colonoscopy included. I've had a colonoscopy before, so I know what to expect with that, but I've never had the upper part done before. My doctor needed to do the colonoscopy and said that since he would already be giving me sedation for it that it would be a good idea to go ahead and check out my esophagus at the same time, with the liver damage and all and also, I've had a little bit of reflux episodes-but not on a daily basis. Anyhow, at least I'll have it all done at the same time.

I had the double whammy done too. I told my doctor he had the most beautiful blue eyes I'd ever seen in my life not once but twice and asked my daughter to find my purse around 8 times, all the while it being on the gurney with me. I don't know what they gave me but I was happy happy and don't remember a thing. We went out for lunch afterwards, no recollection. I'm such a lightweight.
I agree with all thats been said, only thing i can add is i was in and out and back home before i knew it, plus no after effects, felt fine and had no problem eating. Just make sure somebody drives you. But i'm sure you know that.
Take care susan, wishing you the very best.

Try PMing Miles - he loves the stuff. He told them "Go ahead and start the procedure." They laughed and said it was already done.
I've had the Versed/Demerol for colonoscopy and straight Valium for endoscopy - it's all painless.
I have had so many endoscopies Susan that I really cannot say how many but it's easily 25. This was when I had major esophageal varices that required treatment to stop the bleeding and then frequent monitoring. Initially I insisted on no anesthesia and those procedures weren't very pleasant. After a few like that my doctor convinced me to allow him to give me intravenous Versed and Demerol and with those drugs in me I actually started to enjoy the procedure. It's a twilight anesthesia and I used to try to stay conscious for as long as I could because I loved the rush. So, with the proper sedation endoscopies are nothing at all to worry about. From what I know Propofol may even be a better drug than Versed for this type of procedure. I wish you an easy time and, more importantly, good results.
Mike
I also had them, I don't remember a thing! Worse part of colonoscopy is day before.
But honestly Susan it is not as scary as you think! sending you a hug!
I also had the endoscopy/colonscopy combined last month and it was done under the conscious sedation. They said they needed me alert enough to follow directions to swallow the tube, but I don't remember a thing. Was very uneventful, during and afterwards. MUCH easier than I thought......
Good luck on yours tomorrow! Pam
Here is an in depth article on endoscopy and anesthesia.
http://www.assa.md/cms_downloads/GI_Policy.pdf
From the article"
"....Recently propofol (Diprivan®) has been used as an alternative method of sedation for patients undergoing endoscopy procedures. Propofol is a short-acting anesthetic agent. The advantages of propofol are its rapid induction of sedation, quicker patient recovery time, and anti-emetic effect. The use of propofol requires monitoring for respiratory and/or cardiac collapse by trained personnel....."
anti-emetic means anti nausea or something along those lines.

I had endoscopy and colonoscopy performed as one procedure; that is, while I was sedated, they double-scoped me. I had a talk with the doc beforehand to make sure he sequenced everything properly; I told him if I woke up with bad breath, we’d have words :o).
The anesthesiologist used a fentanyl/versed combination; I was completely out, and don’t remember a thing about the procedure. They will probably put a rubber block in your mouth that has a hole in the middle to allow the scope to pass through, while the block protects your teeth. Susan. Make sure you follow any pre-op instructions, and you should be fine.
When I came out of the fog, there was no sense that any procedure had occurred; just a slight hangover from the sedation drugs. No sore throat or clue that they had been there.
No problems were found, and I was given a good bill of health; the doc said he didn’t need to see me again for years, unless something else happened in the interim. I found this to be a completely painless procedure.
Good luck with the procedure as well as the results, and let us know how it went.
Take care—
Bill
If they are giving you propophol (sp?) I have had it during colonoscopy. It made me sleep, and I had no nausea when I awoke. I usually have difficulty with anesthesia, makes me very ill, so propophol is a Godsend. Best of luck.

totally painless procedure with proper sedation but the one i had wasnt exactly conscious more dream like and i only remembered the beginning. make sure they take a stomach snip for biopsy and h. pylori while they're down there. my last gastro bypassed that step and it pissed me off
