Low Cholesterol caused by Liver Damage ?

Does anyone know if low cholesterol can be caused by Liver damage. I am st 3 gr 3. All the doctors seem to think that my low cholesterol is great. Total cholesterol is 110. Triglycerides are 43. HDL is 48 and LDL is 53. But I remember my Cholesterol being about 150 around 15 years ago when I probably had less Liver damage. I am GT 3 which causes Fatty Liver.

I thought I read on a post that HR said something about a comprimised Liver not making enough Cholesterol.

I disagree slightly with Jim in that I believe Low Cholesterol is caused by HCV rather than liver damage. But that could be the G3 coming out in me.

And yes Doctors thinking Low Cholesterol is a good thing is a pain in the @rse.
I've just come to accept that they dont understand the association between HCV and low blood lipids.

Fatty Liver and low cholesterol kinda go together.

My biopsy and ultrasound shows Fatty liver. But my blood work was always normal except for elevated alt 110 and ast 75.

Yes, there is an association between low cholesterol and liver damage. That said, you can have low cholesterol and no liver damage or high cholesterol and significant liver damage. Point being that many other factors help determine liver damage, including certain blood markers such as platelet count, size of spleen, imaging studies, physical examination, and probably the most accurate being a needle biopsy or the newer Fibroscan device. Did you have a biopsy? Did your biopsy or scan show fatty liver? Given your excellent lipid values, hopefully you don't have fatty liver which can progress faster in genotype 3's. In any event, your treatment hopefully will take care of all that.
