Nausea from Tx Suggestions

My mother is on week 6 of tx.  I'm up visiting her and that last 2 days her nausea and vomitting has gotten really bad.  Do you have any suggestions that have worked for you?  Right now milk is the only thing she can stomach.  I was thinking she could try some Ensure or Boost.  She's lost 25 pounds in the last 2 months...but Dr. not concerned at present.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ginger ale and dry toast with weak tea were my grandma's soverign remedies for nausea.  Ensure will help her get some nutrition if she can keep it down.

Do you live in a state that permits medical marijuana?  If so, ask the doctor, its great for nausea and appetite.  I used it during cancer chemo because nothing else worked and I was losing more than a pound a day. I had to get street drugs because my state does not permit doctors to prescribe marijuana, it was well worth the risk. Zofran never quite worked for me and its very expensive (four years ago I paid $1200 for 30 pills!), but lots of folks get a good result from it.  The problem I see is that when you can't hold anything down, oral medication is not a good solution.  (See Mike's comment re suppositories).

Good luck to you and your mother.

See that is what I mean, you tried everything else BEFORE you went to the prescription drugs.

I see a lot of people on here advising prescription drugs first not adding that it is smarter to try the easier methods, before getting scripts. Addednum can always be added if this doesn't work  this script will work. It bothers me.

After my accident they did that to me,  gave some heavy duty drugs, I was like a zombie,  I found that in most cases tylnol or a lesser  drug worked just as well.  Without the added side effects.

Because nothing else worked for me. I tried everything without any benefit and the reason I used suppositories was that I couldn't take anything by mouth. Does that sound reasonable to you? It wasn't automatic in my case - it was one of the last resorts and, fortunately for me, it worked. Mike

I do not understand something, why do people automatically  go for prescription drugs?

When sometimes something simple is often just as helpful? The liver has such a hard time  metabolizing so many things.

Obviously I understand that  the simple method may not work, and some need to move  on to scripts.     That is fair enough, but I can not tell you how often I been surprised  that something as simple as ginger ale or what ever works just as well, as cause my stomach, my head, no side effects.

You need a prescription for Compazine (Prochlorperazine). It is not an over the counter drug. Mike

started n compazine, which you can get OTC,
had to switch to phenergen as the dramamine/compazine gave me headaches.

was she vomiting before going on treatment? that could be her gall bladder.

if she is sickest the day of shot, have her eat light, broths, jello, applesauce, tea toast,
nothing acidic, oatmeal is good.

it's just like the first day of a flu, you get more INF absorption that first day, so adjust your diet to give the tummy a rest.

also get her on an anti-nausea drug. Also, take her Riba with some food, and a little fat but not much fiber. the riba can upset the tummy. She may feel better taking 2 pills 3 times a day, instead of 3 pills twice a day. If her stmach get sore no matter what she eats the Riba with...that's one alternative also.  Hpe she gets better.

Is there any yellow, green, or foamy stuff when she vomits? Does she still have her gall bladder?

Phenergan is an antihistamine that is commonly prescribed for cancer chemotherapy induced nausea, and is used for HCV patients as well. Have your mom ask her treating doctor if this is indicated for her situation.

Compazine suppositories work great and it's the only thing that did work for me And you don't have to swallow them - in the traditional sense that is. Mike

Ginger is great for nausea,  milk may be causing more harm,   Try ginger ale, ginger snaps.     Fat also helps oatmeal with half and half. The fat helps the ribo, but it also helps with the nausea.

Boost and ensure won't hurt her.  It is part of the treatment nausea unfortunately.  But they could give her some other options to settle stomach.

Best of luck
