Dear One,
You have been in my heart.  I see you gracefully, gratefully and graciously dealing with whatever has been dealt to you.  Your heart and humor, your intellegence and world view will help you make the right decisions.  Good advice from HR re supplements.  I agree about the endoscopy.  Not a difficult proceedure and you will know much more about your condition.  Banding can really help.  Some docs also suggest perscription meds to lower the hypertinson.

How is your body feeling since ending treatment?

I am still on TX going for 72 weeks. last shot Jan 11.  Been on and off 270 peg.  Now just maintaining on SOC.  I have been back to work  since summer.   Currently have a bad cold and wanting to sleep sleep sleep.

I am so glad for the afternoon we shared.  I see you shinning brightly.

Love, Oceanliver

We all have "leaky "guts. The question is how leaky and what liver waits behind the "leaks" .
Inulin is very important to add.  Thre is no reason not to take the lactulose all the time. It is not a last resort medicine, it is a great prebiotic.

It is important to understand the different types of intestinal flora and how you can influence the prevalence of the nonpathogenic kind..

Glutamine powder is not expensive. It is well researched, that it specifically helps maintain intestinal epithelial health/integrity.

Do you know what spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is?

NAC plus equal amounts of Vit C are also missing from your formula. How much curcumin is in your tumeric?

Re the endoscopy/banding : If you dont need it, he will not do it. If you do need it: Bleeding from esophageal varices is one of the scariest and deadliest complications of cirrhotic portal hypertension.

Thanks for the informative reply.
I haven't been taking lactulose for months.

I eat very little meat. I don't have a leaky gut, as far as I know! I eat small meals, focusing on high complex carbs, fresh organic veggies, fruit and some yogurt. If I get canker sores, I take acidopholus.

I'm taking omega 3 fish oil, milk thistle, ALA, gotu kola, SAM-E, tumeric and bromelain.

Do you think I should still take Glutamine? I'll do most anything to help aid my liver.

The endoscopy doesn't scare me, the banding idea does. It hurts my throat thinking about it.
I know, I'm silly and should get over it.

Yes, unfortunately you do fit the defintion of decomp cirrhosis. I would add Inulin to the daily lactulose ( another prebiotic ( branched Fructooligosacharide chain that has been well researched and found slightly superior to FOS)). Cheap - you get it at Trader Joes. Furthermore a heaping teaspoon of Glutamine a day is advisable for intestinal epithelium integrity and will lessen the leaky gut syndrome that contributes to the intestinal toxicity burden of the poor remaining liver. Do you have a probiotic in place? Many small meals, well distributed over the day, with a decent but not excessive amount of lean protein mixed with mainly veggies and some fruits are necessary to not overburden the liver with excessive nutrient influx at any point in time.

Do you have any liver protective supplements in regular use?

Do the endoscopy with your properly advising hepatologist - what is the problem? It is an easy procedure and it will confirm if the "weaning off propranolol" was a good idea.

Lets see,how do I know?  There was the ascites which is why I first saw a doctor about my 'condition.' I looked pregnant but was still swimming daily and climbing up mountains, doing pilates, etc.
I was diagnosed with HCV and cirrhosis ( Sept. 2005, in Bangkok) I got rid of the ascites with diuretics and maintain a low salt diet. The ultrasound showed scarring. I've been on propanlol thoguh weaned myself off of it. My heptoligist really wants to do an endoscopy.
I had encephalopathy but got rid of that with lactulose.

I'm careful about what I eat, am taking supplements and feel I'm doing well, all things considered.
Last time my MELD score was 12. My heptologist would like to get me on a transplant list but I don't have insurance and I'm squeamish about invasive techniques.
Got any ideas?
