Swimming pools, Chlorine, and Skin Problems

Thinking of starting to work out in an indoor swimming pool. Wondering if anyone on treatment -- or post treatment -- has worked out in a chlorinated pool and how it affected their skin. I also have psoriais and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Been off the treatment drugs for about six weeks now.

There was a swim competition, competeing where 3 brunets and a blond headed girl. They were doin the breast stroke of course and the brunets beat the blond in the competition. The blond in discust declared foul to the ref, complaining , ha them brunets used thier arms!

Thanks. I've been doing light workouts out on a regular basis since I've stopped treatment -- both aerobics and weights. Walking/running/cycling/kayaking would be my first choice for aerobics but the soles of my feet are still inflamed from the psoriasis so I'm looking for alternate, non foot-friction aerobic workouts. I used to be on my high school swimming team. I was pretty good with the breast stroke for what that's worth. Glad the folic acid and B vitamins are helping. Are you injecting B12? Pills? Or sublingual? Pills are often hard to absorb. You might want to order serum b12 and serum folate tests to check if you're deficient and to monitor your progress.

What d'ya know? I was pretty good at the breast stroke in high school too. I learned to swim the summer after graduation.

I've been swimming a bit lately - I had stopped back in my 3rd week of tx. I find the pool very drying on the skin. I don't have real skin problems, so I disregard it, although I should be more diligent with applying moisurizer.

Good luck.

It's not truly a pool unless there are critters in it. Of course if we count you I guess it is:)

Sadly, most of my muscle has turned to mush.

I think can-do reported this problem too......but I believe he said the whole thing was affected....

I've been getting in the pool at least a couple of times a week (followed by hot tub).  Even when I don't feel like a real workout, the cool water really makes me feel better (especially headaches).

I had riba rash early on and hit it hard with moisturizers, etc.  It went away and I haven't had huge skin problems (I'm diligent with moisturizers still).

The pool seems to have no effect on me.  I always shower afterward and rub Burt's Bees Vitamin E oil on my body during my shower.  Then follow with moisturizer.  No problems.

Besides, inhaling that Chlorine might enhance the riba...

Oh I have been checking the temp in the pool EVERYDAY because it looks sooooo inviting!  I too was wondering what the chemicals and chlorine would do to me.  I am thinking of swimming early morn before the sun really comes out.  Nights are almost impossible here in a couple of weeks due to mesquitos.  Them suckers are as big as cows down here on the coast!

I figure a cool shower after a swim and really pile the gold Bond on after the shower.  What cha think?

I have a pool and have been swimming some the last two weeks.  It hasn't seemed to bother my skin.  I always shower right after and greese up real good.

Haven't been able to do laps yet, hopefully soon after tx.  Sadly, most of my muscle has turned to mush.

Best of luck.  Let us know how it goes.  Swimming is a passion for me, I'd hate to think I if I couldn't do it anymore.

I took a form of water aerobics during tratment and saw no adverse effects from the clorinated water.  I did not swim laps because of fear of ear infections and other winter-related infections at a public pool, with low ANC, but would not be afraid to after tx.

My hubby's psoriasis has kicked into high gear with the summer weather.  It was almost non-existent during the winter long pants weather, but is back now.  Curious since sunlight is supposed to be good for it - but it seems to hve the opposite reaction.  Does the sunlight negatively affect you too?

Fisheress -- what are you waiting for?  Jump on in.  I think the early morning swim is a great idea.  I am envious of ya'll with pools!

Funny you should bring up that question. I have a pool as well, and an outdoor shower next to it, near the oyster bar, by the Jacuzzi and Sauna room, next to the stairs that lead up to the massage room and racquetball building. My butler usually takes care of putting the Gold Bond on my back, since my girlfriend left me for Fabio, but I find that too personal, so I use a sponge on a plastic handle (usually used for cleaning toilets), and I smear some Gold Bond on that, so I can then reach my back.

I shower off immediately after swimming and run into my bedroom, step out onto the balcony where's there's more light and birds singing, and while my butler brings me a nice tall glass of carrot juice, I slap on the Gold Bond Extra cream all over my soon to be bronze body.

My doctor said that this is the solution to stop the insurmountable and exploitive, irritating itching, which I have a lot of three weeks post treatment. Sadly, he said as long as I have Hep C, I will have the itching (but not this bad) and Insomnia, which I plan to tackle next.

For sleep, instead of ingesting the heavier chemicals found in sleeping pills (which some could be addictive), I take anti-histamines. It really helps with the itching and makes you groggy and sleepy. Naturally, you should be careful on a long term basis, and always ask your Gastro first. My dermatologist has prescribed Doxepin 25mg once a day at bedtime. Hope this info helps...

LOL, that was good. Hope that means your feeling better. Might take jim a while to respond, could be his oil and cream time.

Just came back from ten laps in a chlorinated Olympic size indoor pool. Try for 15 tomorrow, 20 Wednesday and hopefully up to 50 by next week. Showered and then applied Alpha Keri Oil (sort of like baby oil with other good stuff in it) and then an Aveeno lotion chaser. We'll see how the skin holds up but getting in the water sure felt good.

That was the point I was also trying to make but somehow Dyce missed it. Must be the hgb :)

Friole, I plan to get a pair of earplugs at the drugstore, as I did have a couple of ear infections during tx, at least one from water getting in. I also made sure to wear flip flops on the way to the pool and in the shower. My immune system is so f*cked up that I'd probably bring home bird flu after visiting the zoo.

Funny, we have a similar routine but I let my buttler slap the cream on before she kneads my aching muscles.

Thanks for the info as they express some of my initial concerns. On the other hand, I'm also in need of a good cardio workout that will be kind to my psoriatic feet and swimming is a great whole body (including mind relaxing) exercise that fits that bill. So I guess I'll take Kalio's advice and keep a watch on how it all works out, while at the same time be fastidious about hygeine at the pool, including wearing flip flops and showering before and after. Of course, swimming in the ocean would be ideal but until Strator's butler picks me up and deliver's me to Strator's cabana by his house on the ocean, I'm kinda stuck with indoor pools for now.

Lim: Lol-think ya got me mixed up with Magnum there. I got a inground pool in the backyard that we put in in 1966 or so. Today it's about 3/4 full and probably very green and gross under the cover. Got no idea how i'm gonna fare opening it this year, it's always a ton of work. We've removed and replaced it (by hand ourselves) 3 times in 40 years. Maybe I'll start callin my kid Higgins or something, see if he starts waitin on me. All's I know is when the pool opens if I see the cabana boy pull up in a milk truck, I'm runnin for the hills. Or maybe I'll open it ot the public as 'Stand Up by the Pool".
(Everything around here flooded this weekend from rain, except for are broken down old yard..cause we've built it back up so many times. About 12 houses on our side of the street and were right in the middle. 100 x whatever lots, it was hilarious a few possums got flooded out of their dwellings and they all cruised over to our back lot cause it was dry ...looked like they were starting a support group.
While I got ya I had a couple of questions further down, maybe you would know.
1. Wondering, thought I saw you post the other day that anemia is related to riba absortion, hmmm. So should I want to be anemic? My hglb popped back up to 11.5 on it
