How long to get started?

How long is the process to get started on tx?  I mean, once your doc tells you you will need treatment, how long does it take between insurance, getting meds, and whatever else, so you can have a start date??  Hope this makes sense.  Best to everyone going through tx right now, and best to all the pre-treaters here (like me).  I expect to start in August but now am not sure.

I think my case was similar to James, but should be no more than 2 weeks.  I put it off for over 6 months due to recovering from a surgery and a cluster of scheduled meetings.

Once the doctor determines HCV and sends the script with the proper diagnosis codes and drug codes, the insurance company can process it.  Once the insurance company has these codes in hand you can work with them or their special pharmacy to ask questions regarding costs and schedule delivery of the meds.  Delivery is overnighted in dry ice and requires a signature.  I'd suggest to avoid a Friday delivery in case of a screw up.

You will likely have a scheduled appointment with you doc once the drugs arrive to discuss everything especially the injection of inf, since this is awkward for most of us.  In my case, I did the first shot in their office and on my own from there.  After a few times, not a big deal at all.

Best of luck getting started.  Try not to overthink or put it off too long.

Thanks aj.  I had to wait a few months too, before my first appointment with the hepatologist.  Things were soooooo confusing to me, so I didn't go back.  Since I am being monitored for another condition, my other doc convinced me I had to go back.  So the journey has been 2 years (which is short compared to people in the forum who have known for years and/or treated more than once), and I pray I achieve SVR the 1st time round.  Learning a lot here from everyone, but still trying to learn patience :)

I was diagnosed in oct/nov2010.I waited 2 months to get an app with my hep dr. Since then I have waited for the new drugs to come.out then it was retesting me to make sure I had hep c(my vl was very low). Then it was he wanted to find out all he could about the drugs and the side effects and determine which was best for me. My appt is Tuesday. He will then dicuss all my options with me. Then he has to put in to my ins and then.....order scripts. So the waiting has been interminable but I appreciate his thoroghness. I was told ins co can take up to a week to ok. Scripts will take 2-3 days to be delivered. I am sure this varires with each co.

Wow, Thanks everyone.  I was diagnosed in 2009.  It wasn't until this year that I agreed to have a liver biopsy but because of the new drugs being approved, my doc told me I would not need a biopsy afterall (not just me but across the board; so maybe for people who are not high risk, like me?  Dunno.).  So we decided on starting treatment in August, giving her a month to evaluate how her other patients were doing on the meds.  But now, there may be a hiccup in scheduling, so I'm trying not to stress.  It takes a very long time to come to terms with starting treatment at all, so as much as I don't want to, I certainly don't want it delayed another month or two.

And I'm calling myself a "pre-treater" since I have decided to treat but have not begun yet.  Hope that makes sense :0)

The wheels turn slow so try to be calm and patient. I know the anticipation is rough but the day will come soon enough. The 2-week turn around for James is probably the fastest I know of. It took months for me.

Went pretty fast for me, two weeks.  I wasn't ready needed to finish a few projects first.  The pre tx anxiety can be pretty bad, it was a relief to start.

Alot of 'hurry up and wait' when it comes to treating, my thoughts on that is when the first few people ever treated they had to wait. So the curse has been passed down. Good luck.

Also diagnoised in March and STILL waitng. I think they try your patience to see if your worthy. It sure is a waiting game. To the point that I personally get really upset. Times a wasten. Now here is a dumb question. What is a pre-treater?  Dont think I've heard that term before but then again theres been a lot of NEW info coming into my aged brain since March.

Hi beeblessed, I was dx in March and I am still waiting, apparently that is part of the process the waiting game. I see my Dr end of next week hopefully things will be ready to go. Lots of people on the forum have said it takes a while from diagnoses to treatment. Hopefully someone else will chime in, but I am a pre-treater as well, so you are not alone with the waiting..
