Hep C confusion

I am a 27 y/o male nursing student. I was taking care of a patient a couple of months ago who had Hep C. i was charged with starting his IV. I palpated his left AC with a gloved hand because there was some blood there from a blood draw. upon uncapping the IV i stuck myself with the clean needle. I talked to my instructor about the situation and was told to not worry about it because it was a clean needle, but my fear is because i palpated where there was possible blood contamination i could be infected. Are my fears founded? should i be checked for hep c?

My reaction to your scenario is that there's nothing to worry about.  The reality is, however, that your worry probably won't be put to rest until you have the Hep C test.  Get the test and put it to rest.

The average risk of transmission via needle-stick is:
1 in 3 for Hep B
1 in 30 for Hep C
1 in 300 for HIV
There is protection for Hep B, and HIV has no longevity outside the body... but Hep C... 1 in 30... over the course of a lifetime? There will come a time when EVERYONE has a yearly check for this insidious condition... and in my opinion that time can't come soon enough, but for now, you are in the medical profession, if it was me, I'd be tested every year.

being a nursing student makes you one in the risk groups so you should test periodically for blood borne diseases , i don't think that u can transfer hcv from this needle stick.
