Who Pays for the PI Trials?

Hello, Troop*
Husband, G3, relapsed after standard tx. He's now under the care of CPMC In SF & dr has said the he'll go into PI trial. My question: Who will pay for this? If it's a "trail", is the whole thing free or will will my insurance company be expected to pick up the cost of INF & riba?
Hope you are all doing well.  I am awesome! & have just today worked up the nerve to get my annual follow up for viral infection.
Regards & hugs to all/

I am currently in the Zymogenetics trial for Interferon Lambda. They pay for everything including paying me $20 every time I go to the clinic. It a great deal because I am not that far from the clinic. They do not pay for any helper meds but I have not needed any. I took my 12th injection today.

I was in the boceprevir trial, the drug manufacturer paid for all tests, blood draws, meds, and doctor visits. The trial site paid me 65.00 dollars per visit. Some trial sites do this and others don't............ Sorry that your hubby relapsed. Wishing you both the best.

Generally speaking, the drug manufacturer sponsors and pays for the trial.  They reimburse the trial site and provide the trial meds. The trial sites make a few bucks on the process.  Should not be any cost to the participant.  Some trials actually pay the patient for some time and travel.

You and hubby should look at some of the data for the PI's that have been through some earlier phases.  For example, teleprivir has not shown overwhelminly great results for geno 3.  But, tvr is not the only PI currently in trial.

As you've probably read here, the folks at CPMC have a very good reputation.
