Terrible to hear that your husband is going thru such difficulty. Maybe you can just ask the hospice nurse if he could just take the med every other night. good luck
Sorry your husband is bedridden, My daughter has end stage liver disease and has to have at least three bowel movements a day to keep her amonia level down. She is on crystalose which is tasteless and sometimes it works and at other times no.She is at an 11 meld score for a transplant.
In have a friend who is endstage and 2 years ago had a TIP procedure and now takes 2 oz of latculose 5 times a day. He just came out of a hepatic coma Last tuesday. He ahd an amonia level of 135. Now he is having memory issues. He has now begun to realize how important his latculose is. It keeps his amonia down and with his diet (45 grams of protein daily) he still gets out and builds cars and motorcycles. He said he will live with the runs if he must. The latculose keeps away the confusion and agitation that comes with increased amonia levels. So it can help alot. I have seen the results and it I reach taht point I know I will take it.
Just a thought for your friend that is now taking latculose. I know how horrible it taste. My daughter was on it for quite some time. Her doctor switched her to crystalose, which is the same thing but is tasteless. She mixes it with about 1/2oz. of sugarfree Haiwian punch. She sometimes has to take six or seven doses per day.
