glucosamine for aches??

I've had a lot of soreness in my hip joints and deep muscles. My friend swears by glucosamine.
I left a message for my nurse but wondered if anyone is taking it for dealing with the sxs of tx, namely, aches and pains?

Thanks.

Belle: I understand reducing swelling helps to relieve pain.
However, after my experience with liver disease I won't go near any kind of ibuprofen.
It still disturbs me that these things, that can cause liver problems are so frequently prescribed.
I'm sure if it works for you, and you use it in moderation, that it's fine for you and I thank you for your reply.

Thanks everyone.
I think, for now, I'm not going to do anything.
Ironically after posting this the pain in my hips dissipated.

I'm a bit nervous because the first time interferon, neupogen and my decompensated cirrhosis took the flexibility out of my bones.
This time I'm taking vitamin D, calcium and magnesium.

Curious:
Thanks for explaining and clarifying.

It is not that I am recommending against it.  I am just neutral since I am not on the same study, don't know what could interfere with absorption of the study meds etc. and because the research does not support my contention that it helps.

I also take it in combo form called MoveFree with MSM etc.  The trial sponsor did not have a problem apparently but I take it hours after I take my study meds.  They told me to dump my proton inhibitor and replac with zantac that does nothing for my tummy.  So I, in turn, had to temporarily dump my drug for osteo because it irritates my osteo.

Can't speak relative to treatment, but for myself, I found the combo of glucosamine and chondroitin seemed to help alleviate some of my joint pain ... I found a drink form called 'Elations' ... it's rumored to be more biologically accessible in liquid form... and nice that it tasted yummy too.  Best of luck finding relief. ~eureka

Use the combination Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin. You can usually find it sold combined in that way. I use it for arthritis of knees and it helps. Glucosamine by itself didn't do anything for me.

Okay, so much for passing on things I read online.
Why wouldn't you recommend it?

I'm not looking at it for sx in general but specifically the pain in my hip joints.
If it helps the deep muscle stuff, that would be great.
I can't take tylenol for everything, besides it doesn't work well for me, never has.
Like you, I am not a study, I've followed a bizarre path to get to where I am, and I'm willing to do whatever works as long as it  feels right to me.

I take it but not for sx and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone else.  Studies do not support its efficacy.  It does tend to relieve my joint pain I find but I am an individual and not a study.  I'm diabetic so there ya go.

Yes, my friend is raving about gluc too. I think it depends on each person and the particular cause of pain.
One thing I read was people who are allergic to shellfish or are diabetic should not take it.
I'm going to give it a try.
Good luck with your tx.

One of my friends swears by the gluc but I have had a few other injuries that always bother me when the weather turns cold so I thought I would try it. I also have been using Milk Thistle but after reading some threads here it sounds like I"m wasting my time on both. O well. I also dance in a circle for rain!!!  ( that hasn't worked either )
Don't know bout the neupogen effects but hope the gluc works for you

I heard back from the nurse who got the okay for me to take gluc.

Gene:
If you've taken it for a year, and it isn't helping then I would quit.
My understanding is it works on the cartilage in our joints.
Pain can come from many sources.
And although Hector is amazingly informative, supplements don't seem to be his forte.
Personally, I wonder if my pain would ease if I wasn't taking neupogen, my least favorite part of tx, that and my increasingly bad attitude.

I don't know the answer but I do have the same problem and have been taking the gluc. for about a year now. All I can say is it hasn't really made a difference for me. I am sure others will chime in but I am glad you asked this question and I look forward to Hector or others with a more informative answer for both of us.
p.s. I am not on any tx right now but will be soon

Good Luck
