Anyone remember Jeff Conway from Taxi? He just died of pneumonia & sepsis. The important part of this condition or disease is catching it early and I definitely had warnings. Lightheadedness, extreme, low blood pressure, and flu like symptoms sent me back twice and saved my life, and I am so greatful to be here, Thank you dear God! So important to listen to your body and go with your instincts.
Surgery always has risks; moreso as we get older. Hospitals are full of germs too. There are more germs in hospitals than about any place else I can think of. Pneumonia is a big deal and you may want to think about getting a vaccination after you recover which is good for 10 years. Also, while you're at it, think about a shingles shot too which only people over 60 can have.
My Doctor's DX was pneumonia & sepsis. I had gone to ergent care and they sent me home with some cough syrup and said I had a virus. Three days later I went bad and said I feel like I'm dying and that's when they finally took a blood test. They say they don't know what caused it. I did have surgery lately which is a huge red flag but no one wants to say that a doctor may have caused it. I'm the only one who seems to care where it came from. I had my follow up appt, yesterday and my blood tests are looking better but I still have low blood pressure and extreme fatigue. Thank you for your response.
"is there a way to find out if my liver caused it?"
What does your doctor say? You just had a life threatening medical condition. Surely you doctor has made a diagnoses.
Why you had had pneumonia is not something we can answer without your medical history. Besides this community is to discuss hepatitis C and all ramifications.
Pneumonia is an infection of the lung. Sepsis is a severe illness in which the bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria. Sepsis can be caused by an infection of the lungs. (bacterial pneumonia). Only your doctor who treated you can say what happened. Of course both pneumonia and sepsis can be "hospital-acquired" as can many other infections.
Talk to you doctor. Have them explain what happened and how you can prevent it from reoccurring again. Sepsis can cause death. It is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. This is nothing to be taken lightly. Hepatitis C is a minor issue compared to sepsis.
If you have a weakened immune system and End-Stage Liver Disease then you will be more prone to infections. Since I don't believe this is the case your pneumonia and resulting sepsis shouldn't have anything to do with your hepatitis C or liver disease.
Talk to you doctor. It is their job to make a diagnosis and help you prevent this from happening again.
