why another 12 weeks

I saw my doctor on Thursday, as of now I show NO ANTIBODIES to HCV,(yippie) I was tested at 7 weeks still have 4 more weeks of SOVALDI & Riba.  He told me he wanted to do 12 more weeks of treatment because that's what is recommended. I called him on a few things like why not sovaldi & olyisio he said because the FDA hasn't approved it. Did I think I was smarter and know more about LIVER DISEASE then him! I about fell off my chair, anyway just waiting to hear if my INSURANCE will approve 12 more weeks, thank Jesus no bad side effects. So I guess my QUESTION is, is 24 weeks normal protocol for some. I'm geno 1A. Thanx everyone for your responses and keep up the good fight. Kelly

TY,mabey that explains it best. I chose to wait for treatment so I could avoid interferon, We monitored my liver functions, numbers, ect.  until I could treat without.

24 weeks is the recommended treatment duration for genotype 1 patients who are interferon ineligible
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recommended Regimens and Treatment Duration for SOVALDI
Combination Therapy in HCV Mono-infected and HCV/HIV-1 Co-infected Patients

Patients with genotype 1 or 4 CHC

SOVALDI+peginterferon alfa+ribavirin
12 weeks

SOVALDI in combination with ribavirin for 24 weeks can be considered as
a therapeutic option for CHC patients with genotype 1 infection who are ineligible to receive an interferon-based regimen

No bad side effects at all, once in awhile a mild headache but most of the medicine is in the morning just 2 riba about 7 and I fall asleep with no problem. No im only seeing my GI no HEPATOLIGIST in this area.  He chose no interferon because of my job, I was afraid if I did get brain fog I would have a heck of a time because I deal with ALOT of money, he said this would work for me, I was under the impression just 12 weeks tho,  I have never treated before but so far so good. I will get blood work in 2 weeks and keep you posted. Good Luck

Hi Kelly I think that tx is based on the individual.
I recently saw another person who could not treat with interferon and he is going to have to do 24 weeks on same tx  your are on..  I am sorry you could not ask your doctor a question.  There are so many tx's and variations of tx now it would be hard to say why he decided on this.  Is this your first tx?
