Hiatal Hernia

Dear Doctor,

thank you so much for entering in my post

I am a guy of 28 years, I've been suffering for 7 years from acid reflux with hiatus hernia of 1,5 cm of diameter, diagnosed by endoscopy made on date 27/06/2009
my symptoms are:

1)pain in the central part of my stomach with presence of a sort of little ball which is visible even to naked eye
2)feeling of foreign body in the throat
3)feeling of burning to my oesophagus
4)rarely small spills from the mouth of gastric

My GP doctor gave me a therapy of Lansoprazole caps (ec grans), 15mg.

I asked my doctor about a surgery operation, and she told me that here in England they don't do it any more this kind of operation, and she added they do it just when the hernia is very big

When I write down a post in medicine forums about this illness every doctor says that the methods to do this kind of operation are several, and it's possible to do it when:
the patient is young and he doesn't want to take medicines for all his life,
the patient has got regurgitation and he can't control it with medicaments,
or when the patient decides to do the operation for his choice

So why when I ask about it in physical environment like hospitals or doctors they say me that is not possible, and in medical forums they say me totally the opposite

I really want to do this operation
My life is very limited with this problem: I cant even go for a drink with friends as how painful it is, sometimes I can't drink even cold water

Most of the time I have to be sit at my work and sometimes I fall asleep on my chair because I can't even drink a coffee, coffee is like poison for my stomach

Sometimes I have all my throat is irritated and I have problem to talk to people

Why I have to suffer all my from this illness if a solution is possible?

Any information concerning this will be very appreciated

Thank you so much for taking your time out reading my e-mail

I look forward to hearing from you soon

Kind regards

Hi my husband has been going a lot of complications which has taken a toll on his life as well as his families life. Just my advise is if any repairs are done please do not consider having a mesh placed to repair ur hernia. There way too much complications and a lot of ppl are suffering from them. If surgery is ur answer pls have it done the old school fashion by suturing it up. I really don't have any kind of answers for wat ur going through now but I do wish the best for u. Btw pain pills is easy to get dependent on them and that will not not help ur situation out me!! I stress!!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello and hope you are doing well.

I understand your predicament. But if your symptoms can be managed conservatively that would be the best option. Since medications don't seem to be helping much why don't you try life style measures? Take frequent small meals. Eat dinner about two hours before sleeping. Elevate the head end of the bed. Keep a food diary and note down what aggravates your symptoms and avoid them. Ensure to maintain optimum weight by regular exercise. Avoid non steroidal  anti inflammatory medications NSAID's, quit smoking, eliminate alcohol and reduce stress levels. These measures need to be practiced long term for results.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Hi I don't know how to help you but Im in the same boat.  I have a 5cm hiatus hernia and acid reflux, also gastritis.  Ive been suffering for over two years.  Well I get the feeling like something is stuck, a raw burning pain and a pulling feeling in my oesophaghus.  I get a days relief then it flares back up and its agony.  I have problems sleeping with it.  You should go back to the doctor as the Lansoprazole you are on isn't strong enough.  Im on Pantoprazole 40mg and I could take two of them if I want.  Also I have been given Gaviscon Advance to take up to 4 times a day.  We should avoid coffee and follow a GERD diet but its not easy to stick to.  You could ask for a ph monitoring test from a gastro.  Im waiting for my results as my tablets don't help a lot.  I may get an op as I don't want to go on like this. I can't go out for a drink either anymore.  On top of this I get gastritis pain.
