if he had symptoms, he'll need tested to know his status. be very firm with him about why it's important to know if he has hsv2 or not too. he can start wtih a type specific herpes igg blood test now and if it's negative, repeat it in another 6-8 weeks. should he get a recurrence of symptoms before then, he can be seen within 48 hours of their appearance for a lesion culture and typing to confirm infection. assume nothing about his status and get him tested!
Thank you, Grace. :) What spooked me was the sentence on wikipedia that said often the first symptom that a carrier has is that their partner shows symptoms or their baby does when born. So when my partner noticed blisters 9 hours after our encounter (they had probably been there even earlier), I thought I might be a carrier. Our previous encounter had been 4.5 weeks earlier.
So I got tested 6 weeks after his symptoms showed, and I tested positive for hsv2.
HSV 1 IgG, Type spec < 0.91
HSV 2 IgG, Type spec 4.59
Looks like I've been carrying this around for a while without knowing.
He has not tested nor checked symptoms, and is convinced that he has hsv2 - not necessarily from me, although I've been his only partner for a year. He had no other symptoms that I know of - only 2 blisters on the end of his penis. No "flu", no aches, no outbreaks since then (over 6 weeks).
I suspect he won't test, but I think I should take precautions as if he were negative for hsv2.
you won't have symptoms of a newly acquired infection that quickly.
have you ever been tested for herpes before?
have you been seen for your symptoms yet?
