I recently went in for a consultation with a specialist in viral infections at New York Presbyterian. I went in order to resolve a history of conflicting test results. The doctor ordered a blood test and the results were negative for both HSV 1 and HSV 2.
My question is: could a full 12 ounce glass of wine (10% alcohol) the night before the test cause false negatives. That is, could the alcohol reduce the antibody count? As I had not expected a blood test I didn't consciously decide not to have a drink and I just don't recall whether I did or not.
The results of the test were as follows:
The full name of the test given is: Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1/2 IgG & IgM AntiBODY w/ reflex to Type.
1- HSV Type 1/2 Combined Ab, IgG by ELISA ARUP 50286. Result 0.26 negative (Ref range <=0.89)
"Negative-No significant level of detectable HSV IgG antibody."
2- HSV Type 1/2 Combined Ab, IgM by ELISA ARUP 50641. Result 0.21 negative (Ref Range <=0.89)
"Negative-No significant level of detectable HSV IgM antibody."
