Am I being misdiagnosed?

had unprotected sex with a friend of a friend-- I know, not a great idea.  Nine days later I had symptoms of a yeast infection (swollen labia, discharge, and itching).  I went to my doctor, who swabbed, and gave me a prescription for Diflucan (2 doses).  The next day I received an email stated that the swab tested negative for yeast and fungus, but the doctor explained that my clinical presentation was so "classic" that he believed my symptoms would still go away with the Diflucan treatment.  I responded to the email asking if he thought there was a possibility of a STD, specifically herpes, and he said he did not see indication of a rash during his examination.  Also, no swollen lymph nodes, headache, pain during urination, or fever.  The swelling did go down, but I still felt very itchy in the genital area.  A few days later I began my period.  After my period, I was still experiencing the itching, no rash, but this time the discharge was watery instead of "yeast infection like."  I took the second dose of Diflucan and made an appointment with a gyno.  She did a full examination, and again I asked her about herpes.  She said she did not see any blisters inside or outside the genital area.  Diagnosed me with BV and said that the second round of Diflucan should clear it up.  Meanwhile, I went to got tested for STD's-- results all negative.  I didn't realize until after I requested the STD testing that the herpes test was not included in the panel-- but after reading online I found out that it was probably too early to test for herpes anyway through a blood test.  No blisters to culture either.  I still had irritation, itchiness, and tingling in the genital area for several weeks.  The watery discharge has ceased, but I sometimes see a faint discharge, yellowish in color, when I go to the restroom.  There was one night where I had an intense itch on the mon pubis area-- no rash, just itching.  I was able to calm the itch with A&D Ointment.  I made another appointment with my doctor.  He examined me and told me maybe it was Folliculitis and gave me a prescription.  The itching went away on the mon pubis area, but I still feel a general feeling of irritation in my genital area.  I am now at eight weeks past my sexual encounter, and still don't feel quite right down there.  Still no visible blisters.  Should I be concerned?  I have been examined by three different doctors.  They are the experts, but I feel like I have been treated for several different conditions that have resolved.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I've been googling my symptoms, an the only other possibility could be trich.  I don't know what to think at this point.  Any suggestions?

Thank you for your feedback.

Itching and the yellowish discharge are really my only two persistent symptoms.  I want to trust that the doctors are the experts, but I feel like they are just treating me to get me out of the office.  The Folliculitis especially.  I did not think that was even a possibility considering the discharge.  They tell me that it is normal discharge, but I've never had discharge like this before.

I don't know if I should set up another appointment and demand specific tests.  I'm sure they do not like all of the internet research people do, but there is something wrong.  I know there is.  I just want to treat whatever this is so I don't have to experience this anymore.  Not to mention my levels of anxiety over the last two months.

Again, thank you for your response.  Hope you are able to find some relief from your meds soon.

Hi confused719,
I had similar symptoms but minus the itching.  I went to numerous doctor bc I wasn't feeling well don't there and a lot of whitish watery discharge.  They thought it was yeast infection and took the pills like numerous times and also used the cream version.  Nothing helped.  I was also diagnosed wit BV visually and got treated with antibiotic cream but the lab result was negative.  Also they tested for herpes via discharge and it was negative.  So my obgyn ... Recently took another round of test for other bacteria and it came back positive for ureaplama.  So I got 2 high dose of antibiotic and hope this may stop this uncomfortable feeling that's been happening for like 9 to 10 weeks already :(. My HSV 2 was negative via WB ( praise The Lord).

Hope u find out ur cause and u may want to ask for the test : genital mycoplasma and ureaplasma.  My result was mycoplasma genitalium and hominis were neg but positive for ureaplasma spp NAA.

Will be praying you get ur answer and Gid bless, S

Thank you for your response.

I have read that herpes infection typically does not last eight weeks, but I know that herpes infection does affect everyone differently.  Obviously I am not on antivirals, so I thought maybe an outbreak lasting eight weeks is possible.

The doctors seem stumped, or they are just treating various possibilities because I have been persistent that something is wrong.  Getting a herpes test in four weeks is still an option, but I don't want to go another four weeks with these symptoms, especially if it isn't herpes related and it is in fact something else.  I'm also hesitant to go back for another doctors visit, however.  I feel like they think I'm crazy at this point.

Thanks for your help!

A recent infection with herpes is often not missed if there are relevant symptoms.

Also the fact that your symptoms are persistent is another indicator this isn't a herpes infection.

Some fungal issues are very persistent, hence yes they persist in a few number of cases. I'm no expert here on these issues, but what if your condition isn't fungal?

Thank you, Fleetwood.

Are there cases where two rounds of Diflucan would not resolve the itchiness?

Also, if there were lesions on the wall of my vagina or on the cervix, could they easily be overlooked?  During my examination with the gyno, she inserted the speculum, looked for 20 seconds, swabbed, and she said she didn't see anything.

The doctors that I have seen do not seem concerned; I am concerned because nothing has made these symptoms go away.

Just wait?

It does seem more likely related to bacterial/fungal causes. You are not too far now from the 12 week point for an IgG test the results of which you can take as conclusive.
