Can yeast infections become more prevelant when having herpes?

I had my first genital herpes outbreak over a month ago. I was diagnosed with HSV1.  Since the outbreak cleared, I never really felt like everything concerning my vagina was back to normal.  For the past 2 weeks on 2 different occassions I have been getting long thin like cuts or cracks or small cuts in the vulva. I also have been having some discharge that is white and think and kind of clumpy. I went to the doctor and explained what is happening and she said that it is common for your vulva to be more sensative once you have genital herpes, therefore yeast infections or other infections can occur more frequently. I was never actually diagnosed as having a yeast infection, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or knows that these 2 things can be linked?

Thanks

Could be sensitive skin, could be damage to the skin from yeast, it could be the yeast still going on or it even could be the beginnings of a recurrence of genital herpes. If it lasts longer than a few days, follow up on it.

Hi Grace,

So it's been a week since I took the medication for the yeast infection. It definitely helped with the yeast.  I believe that the discharge is now pretty normal however, I did get another little cut on my labia again today.  I am wondering if I am just more sensitive now since I have herpes. I guess if it continues, I will see my physician again to rule out any other infections.  Thanks.

Thanks for your information Grace.  I appreciate the feedback.  I will keep monitoring the situation. You are so right though....sometimes it blows to be female :(

You need to give this first dose a week to fully do its work.  If after a week you are still having issues down yonder, return to your provider for proper evaluation to see if it's only yeast going on.

Mouth flora isn't so normal when it's in the genital area. Oral sex is a good trigger for genital yeast infections. Sometimes breaking the yeast cycle is difficult especially when your first herpes infection is thrown in there too to disrupt everything :(  Sometimes it just blows to be female :(

Sometimes a second dose is necessary with Diflucan, so if you find it lingering or not clear after a few days, you may just want to talk to your doc about a 2nd dose. What a bugger though - as it isn't enough to deal with a herpes outbreak, and then have a yeast infection too! :-)

Yes, she gave me a one time dose of fluconazole which I think is helping. I just took it yesterday and she said that it should be clear within a day or so and the pharmacist said that it can take a couple of days before you notice all of the symptoms are gone.  I was just curious.  I think that since the outbreak, I am much more sensitive to the things going on in my body....maybe a little too sensitive.  I am still obviously adjusting and dealing with the news.  Thank you for sharing petal130.  I appreciate it.

I've had 2 outbreaks (genital HSV1) and both were followed by yeast infections. Otherwise, I hadn't had but one yeast infection, years ago before I had herpes. Did your doctor give you anything to clear it up?
