Culture came back positive, blood test negative

I had symptoms of herpes, so I went to my doctor she did a full exam and took a culture off of one of the sores.  She also did a blood test.  The culture came back positive but the blood test negative.  I have been with one person, unprotected [whom i shouldn't have] for the last 3 weeks about and the symptoms started about a week ago.  I didn't think you could contract it that fast but if it isnt in my blood system yet that has to mean I got it from that person correct?  How fast can it take for you to contract it and have an outbreak? I am under a great amount of stress and was while I was with this person and I was wondering if that made my body more likely to get the infection and have an outbreak so fast?  Please help me I am so confused and hurt.

Doctor just called, results came back it was hsv2.  Partner was tested and negative for all.  Symptoms were over a month ago, i didnt have to get a blood test but wanted one and it came back positive in my blood this time for hsv2.

if you actually have hsv1 genitally and not hsv2, you might've also contracted it orally.

has your new man had a herpes blood test yet to know his own status?

once you get your new blood test results, post them here and I can help you better. it's still early for repeat blood tests though isn't it? how long ago did you have symptoms?

so my first doctor is an idiot. i went back a week ago for a follow up, she never sent out the culture because the blood test combined came back positive so she said she knew i had it it was just newly acquired bc it wasnt showing up positive on hsv1 or hsv2 unless it was combined. had another blood test done last week called today and she said it came back positive for hsv this time shes just waiting for the rest of the results if its hsv1 or 2 but i had problems in the genital area so i know its hsv2. my new man has not gone anywhere near my private area and now has a mark on his lip thats all red and joked around saying "u did this" [he tries to make light of the situation bc he knows how sad ive been but that just hurt more] is there anyway he could get hsv1 from me just being infected?  now im worried he has it even though he has not performed oral of any sort on me.

you had a recent infection. You know you have genital herpes because the lesion culture came back +. It might take several months for the igg to be +.

your lesion culture was hsv2+ . blood tests and results really don't matter for you and your new man.  You know what you have and where you have it which is the info you need to know for deciding together what precautions to take with a new partner. Since this is newly acquired, you going on daily suppressive therapy is certainly a good idea for the next year or so to keep shedding minimal to protect your new partner is he is hsv2-.

keep asking questions :)

i dont understand why on the lab results both hsv1&2 came back <.91 so thats why the 2nd doc said they were both negative, but then combined they were 1.43.  what does that mean and does that mean i definitely have it?  the first doctor told me over the phone and didnt explain much. the 2nd said it was negative looking at the seperate tests but then said it was 1.43 with both tests combined and thats why the other doctor must have said it was positive.  help please, still so confused.  also a nice man is interested in me and i told him my situation and he keeps asking numbers etc to understand better bc hes been tested himself and id like to be able to tell him yes or no.  hardest thing in the world is to tell someone this. he seems undersanding but i know it bothers him a lot, he hasnt run away yet though.. been supportive. but help please!

I'm assuming your provider circled the igm results and told you that that's why it's positive?

your igg's are negative because your body hasn't had time to seroconvert to reflect a recent infection with hsv1 or hsv3.  As Ottmar said, it can take time to occur.

you never had to type all that in - just the actual numeric results. I try not to torture folks too much :)  your blood tests show that you are negative for hsv1 and also for hsv2.

you had a culture that showed normal vaginal flora. looks like they sent it for a routine bacterial culture, not a viral culture.  did they do a 2nd culture which was for viruses that came back as hsv+?

Just got the papers for the results... This is what it says...

HSV 1 IgG Type Spec      0.91
                                             Negative 1.09
Note: Negative indicated no antibodies detected to HSV1.  Equivocal may suggest early infection.  If clinically appropriate, retest at a later date.  Positive indicates antiboidies detected to HSV1; coinfection with HSV2 canot be excluded without type specific testing.
HSV 2 IgG Type Spec     <0.91
                                          Negative 1.09
Note: Negative indicated no antibodies detected to HSV1.  Equivocal may suggest early infection.  If clinically appropriate, retest at a later date.  Positive indicates antiboidies detected to HSV1; coinfection with HSV2 canot be excluded without type specific testing.
HSV, IgM I/II Combination [+]
   HSV, IgM I/II Combination         1.43H   Ratio            0.00-0.90
                                          Negative 1.09
Genital Culture, Routine      Final Report
Result 1
Routine genital flora.

Can someone help me understand this better???

if your hsv2 igg was low ( under 1.1 ) then this is a newly acquired infection.

You had a + lesion culture so you know you have herpes.

was hsv2. im heartbroken.  hsv1 came up negative, hsv2 barely came up, it was when the two were combined apparently that they could actually say i had it.  the hsv2 # was low, the first doctor said i must have just contracted it right away, the 2nd doctor said it could have been there for years.  but if it was there for years and i was tested while i had an outbreak shouldnt the number be higher and easier for them to say its type 2?  i do know i definitely have it.  but now i have two different doctors saying different things. the first doctor who said i had to have just contracted it was the one who actually examined me, the second just read the paper reults.  what would you go  by?

sweetie, I think calling this all shady is being more than generous about it.

At this point, it doesn't sound like you are going to get a straight answer out of this guy.  You don't trust him over all and it sounds like for good reason.  Perhaps it's time to cut your losses and move on from him?

Yes you can be held legally accountable for your actions if you know you have herpes and don't inform a partner of that fact and transmit it to them.  Is there a way to find out if he's been tested and is +? You'd have to get a lawyer and pursue it in civil court.

When you discuss this with your doctor tomorrow, just make sure that the lesion culture you had done that was +, was specifically typed for hsv2.  other than that, nothing you can ascertain from it.

I told the partner.  He said he had no idea apologized so many times felt so bad tried to take me to lunch etc and make me feel better.  It was a one time thing, a HUGE mistake.  Well today I was at his house and he went out and I was curious if he was lying because I don't trust him and I found a bottle of valtrex hidden in a bag with condoms in his drawer.    First he said he didn't know what I was talking about when I sent him the picture of the bottle, then said his doc thought he had it and gave it to him but it was just a stomach virus, then said he didnt take any but half are missing, then said they were a friends, then said they weren't prescribed to him, again denied knowing etc.  Isn't it like a legal thing that if you know you are infected you are legally obligated to tell the person you're going to have sex with and if you don't and they're infected they can get in trouble.  This person is a real piece of trash apparently. Is there any way to find out if he's been tested and positive?  He had the prescription for Valtrex and I told him thats the same medication I'm on because of him but he still claims its not his and he never took it and never knew, yet he cut the name lable [the persons name] off of the bottle. Shady?   I'm so hurt and deceived.  I'm having the results sent to my other doctor tomorrow and we're going to discuss it on Wednesday so I'm hoping he can tell me a little bit more about it.

have you talked to this partner about this? let them know you've been diagnosed and that it's likely it came from them so they need to pursue type specific herpes igg blood testing to see what their own status is.

They say 3 to 4 months will give you an accurate blood test.

Yes it can happen all fast. Outbreaks can occur as little as two days. Keep testing to see which type it is and post the results.

HSV2.  I don't know what the name or brand was they just did a blood test for herpes, all stds, hiv, and aids.  I asked them again today that it must have just occured if it isn't showing in my test yet but positive in the culture and the outbreak I had.  I just didn't think it was possible to catch it so fast and have an outbreak a few days later.  How is that possible?

It can take anywhere between 4 to 6 months for the blood test to become positive on a type specific IGG test. If you are under a month than your body most likley did not develop enough antibodies to be detected.

Did the doctor tell you which type of HSV it wa, as in 1 or 2?

Do you remeber waht the blood test was? The name, brand and was it IGG or IGM.
