Do I really have herpes?

About 6 months ago, after a long night of having sex with my partner, I began to have some vaginal irritation.  I saw my gynecologist because the irritation began to worsen.  She done a swab & a week later informed me that I had herpes.  The partner I had been with of course insisted he did not have herpes.  After several antibiotic treatments, as a precaution before the diagnosis, and after taking Valtrex and using Zovirax cream, the irritation stopped.  I haven't had any other problems until recently.  After another long night of continuous sex, much like before, I was a little sore.  The soreness got worse & some redness appeared, but no blisters.  I saw my new gynecologist & he said the redness could possibly have been from an outbreak & told me to increase the Valtrex that I had already been taking until the irritation was gone.  I took it upon myself to use the Zovirax cream that I had left as well.  This time it does not appear to be responding to the treatment.  Actually, where I applied the cream has, in a matter of hours, developed into large, very red, & very itchy spot just inside the opening of my vagina.  It appeared to have healed, so I had sex with my partner & the irritation immediately returned.  I am wondering if the herpes diagnosis was incorrect.  I have never seen any blisters, & both times the "outbreak" developed after continuous sexual intercourse which caused a lot of friction.  Is it possible that there is something that is causing the vaginal skin to be extremely sensitive?  I have had a blood test that showed positive for herpes simplex 1 & negative for herpes simplex 2, but I have always been very prone to get fever blisters orally.

My original gyn is no help at all. After she told me that the test was positive, she was not very professional toward me.  It felt almost as if she were judging me.  She acted like she was too busy to answer any questions, even when I called to ask about a side effect to the birth control she had prescribed, she wouldn't call me back.  She actually walked out of the room as I was asking her questions about the virus.  I wasn't even aware that there were two types of herpes. Until I changed Dr.'s, any information I had about the virus I got from the internet.

I had the blood test done about 4 months after my original symptoms.  I wasn't having any symptoms at the time of the blood tests.  My new gyn ordered the blood tests so that he could better answer any questions that I had about the virus.  My partner has not yet been tested.  He is, however, aware of my diagnosis, but he hasn't had any symptoms.

If you can call your gyn that did the original lesion culture and find out if it was typed to know if it's hsv1 or hsv2, that would be helpful.

Definitely discontinue the zovirax cream at this point. you might be having a reaction to it for starters plus it's ineffective for herpes recurrences in the genital area so it's a waste of time anyways.

how long after your original symptoms did you have the blood test done? has your partner been tested yet?
