Double Valtrex

Hello again,

I am currently on 500 daily Valtrex for daily suppressive as to reduce transition to my -GF of 4 years who I am now too scared to have sex with due to my recent diagnosis ( different problem, for perhaps a different post ). I read on the expert board that Dr. H prefers 1mg (1000=double my dose) for daily use and typically that is what he prescribes his patients. My question is does doubling my dose double (or significantly improve) the effect of the drug like common sense would dictate? I am sure the research suggests that 500 is sufficient, but if I can add any more protection with no additional risk, why not? Should I petition my doctor for the upgrade?

Any color or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks as always.

the 500mg daily dose is the dose for 9 or less ob's a year. it's what the herpes and reduction in transmission study used for determining the reduction in transmission to  partner.

some providers do prefer the 1gm daily dose for the first 6 months to a year just because. No real research that shows that it reduces recurrences more for the majority of people nor any info that shows that it reduces transmission to a partner even more. considering you've been infected for at least 2 years, no reason to take the higher dose.
