Its estimated that 60% or up of the adult population would test positive for hsv1 and most was contracted at childhood from sharing child dribbling toys and being kissed by relatives who had a cold sore. The reason they got it so easy is that their immune systems were not in place yet. Adults need a harsher way to contract herpes either oral or genital and takes some rubbing and grinding to force the virus into the nerve ganglion.

Most with hsv1 never have a outbreak from those earilier years but can have them later under the right situations like stress or sunlight can cause the hsv1 to travel to the skin surface. Before that, they are hiding in the oral ganglion avoiding antibodies that were created when first contracted..

Hsv2 is more considered a sexually transmitted infection and needs the same rubbing and grinding either by unprotected oral or vaginal intercouse, but also can get it from rubbing of genital parts from an infected person.

Hsv2 once established after the initial breakout does settle down with less harsher and less frequent breakouts.

If a person has hsv2 genital they do need to take precautions during breakout to avoid trasmitting it to a person without it and also figuring the shedding times. Many people with herpes prefer a partner that also has it as makes life simplier.

Antiviral and supression drugs are available for the with more frequesnt breakouts but bottom line those infected with either or both can live and do live a very normal life.
