Genital Transmission of HSV1

My girlfriend recently had a genital outbreak of sores and after getting a culture test from the doctor was diagnosed as having Herpes.  I have tested negative for gential herpes after a urethra swab, but have had HSV 1 symptoms on my mouth since childhood but until now did not realize that it can be spread from oral sex.  She is going to go and get an IGG test to find out if she has HSV 1 or 2, but assuming that I gave her HSV 1 from oral sex what are the risks for us in the future?  Would it be possible for me to now get HSV 1 in the gential area if we have unprotected sex either with or without her having symptoms or as an existing carrier will the symptoms only ever show up on my lip?  Thanks in advance for the advice... this site and forum have been a great resource for us while trying to work through everything.

You were only tested yourself so far thru an urethral swab? If so then I recommend a hsv2 igg blood test for yourself too. Don't assume that you only have hsv1.

Your gf had a non-type specific herpes igg blood test done which was a total waste of time.  She needs a type specific herpes igg blood test that gives seperate results for hsv1 and hsv2.

Thanks for the above advice, it is much appreciated!

With respect to testing, how can my girlfriend find out what strain of HSV she currently has?  We requested an IGG test at a local medical clinic which came back positive but the results did not indicate whether it was HSV 1 or 2.  Is there a blood test that can indicate this or can the type only be tested from a pysical skin sample?

Since you have hsv1 already, the chances of you getting it genitally from her are very very slim.

Also, ghsv1 is rarely infectious - only sheds about 3% of days/year.

I would just avoid sex during symptoms, and you should be fine if she has type 1 genitally.

Here is an article for you - http://blogs.webmd.com/genital-herpes-intimate-conversations/2006/02/type-i-herpes-transmission.html
