HSV 1, no sores but constant itching

2.5 years ago I was diagnosed with genital HSV 1.  I have never had a sore since, but I do have nearly constant "outbreaks" in which the skin at the base of my vagina (or anus/labia depending on the severity) feels raw, sore and extremely itchy for weeks to months at a time.  Acyclovir and Valtrex did nothing for me, and I finally started taking Monolaurin supplements which have been the only thing that helps.  I am wondering if I have a different condition that was sparked by the herpes, or if it made the skin more sensitive? Sex is painful and causes these bouts of intense itching and raw, stinging skin. I have also noticed that I get worse symptoms right before I get my period and often heal once I do finally menstruate.  Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

It sure is a thing. You could have a hormonal issue or ph issue as well.

Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be if not caused by HSV 1?  Since the monolaurin works so well and is also used to treat staph and yeast infections, I wonder if it could be bacterial.  Is that a thing? Chronic bacterial or yeast infections?

Next time this happens go get the area swabbed and pcr tested. This may help prove hsv is on the surface or not. Hsv1 usually doesn't cause issues like you describe and I'm not sure its the cause of your issue. A dermatologist may be the best avenue for a propper diagnosis.
