If you have HSV-1 orally she can perform unprotected oral sex with no fear of getting HSV. She would only need be concerned with not kissing you during active coldsores being present or symptoms of one coming.
Makes sences that I (HSV-1 oral carrier) not perform unprotected oral cunnilings on my girlfriend, I will take that pre-caution. But what about the other way around:
Can my girlfriend (HSV-1 free) get HSV-1 from me, if she performs unprotected fellatio?
(Sorry, last questions, this is good information to know)
Thank you grace.
Your insight has helped me.
Even though the rates of infection with hsv1 genitally are increasing, overall the risk of contracting hsv1 genitally are on the low side. If you already have hsv1 orally, almost no risk of hsv1 genitally from oral sex. If you do'nt have hsv1 orally and a partner does or you aren't sure of their status, consider only receiving oral protected oral sex.
grace
Im guessing then there's a risk (for genitial-HSV-1 infection) from oral sex. Would you say this risk (unprotected oral sex) is faily high (30% of those infected gentially) or classify it as low risk?
And I just wanted to confirm my knowledge in that, does the risk
(of getting genital-HSV-1) become high risk if there is a visual lesion (cold sore) on the person who is giving oral?
wow! that's news to me. 30%!!!! that's alot of people.
thanks for the insight.
About 30% of all new genital herpes cases are HSV1, due mainly to oral sex. You'll read about it often here on the herpes forum. I have HSV1 genitally, confirmed with a swab/culture, just as a point of reference.
Hi grace, I was making general statements of the viruses. My information is correct from a general point of view. There are exception to generalizations (like the 5% of those who have both..etc) and I didn't know this: which is HSV-1 can be genital.
I have HSV-1 (got it as a child), and didn't need a test for that, the lesion are obvious.
I've never had lesions on my genitals, sure enough tested negative for HSV-2.
healthadv, thanks for the clarification, i didn't know HSV-1 can be gential. we learn something new all the time.
HSV1 is ALMOST Always oral, but people do get genital herpes via HSV1. while not common it does happen.
genital herpes HSV2, is always genital.
As for your first question, jesse hit it right , the answer is no.
1. No (almost always the answer is no)
2. HSV-1 outbreak is on your lips (almost always)
HSV-2 outbreak is on your genital area (almost always) including you buttox reagion.
The reason for this is that HSV-1 "lives " on the nueronal ganglia at top by your neck region. HSV-2 "lives" in the nueronal ganglia in the groin/pelvic region.
HSV1 is almost always oral, as oppose to HSV2 is always genital. Genital2 will not effect the face only genital area. Let's say you have oral herpes and you have oral sex with a person who has oral herpes, the chances you will get genital 1 is slim. Oral 1 is a strong defense vs genital 1. On the other hand oral 1 is not so strong vs genital 2, the odds are you will get genital 2.
can you have both hsv1 and hsv2 genitally? yes you can. Less than 5% of folks who have them both, have them both genitally.
When you have a recurrence, how do you tell which it is? Well you can't unless you have lab testing done on the recurrence. When you have an ob, it's pretty much meaningless anyways - you want to be avoiding sex because it's an active herpes recurrence. Most of the time though when you are infected with both genitally, it's hsv2 recurring and not hsv1.
care to give any background about your questions so that I can better help you with your situation?
