Herpes Meds

I have had genital herpes for several years over 10.  I get maybe about 1-3 outbreaks per year.
I don't always take suppressive therapy, but recently I started then stopped, then I had a mild outbreak the week before last.

I took one Acyclovir pill that day then twice a day for about 3-4 days, not sure of the dosage, but the outbreak seemed to be going away, then today I felt the pain again.  The outbreak is still there but much smaller.
I did miss a couple of days

I asked my doctor to prescribe Valtrex, she did, so I will start taking that today twice a day for 3 days.

Any thoughts or experiences like this?

acyclovir works just fine. the main difference is you have to take it more often than you do valtrex. click on my name and go to my journal and look for a post titled how should I treat my herpes for more info.

if you are going to take suppressive therapy, take it 400mg twice a day every single day if you are using acyclovir. if you want to just treat ob's as they occur, the easiest way is to take 800mg 3 times a day for 2 days with acyclovir.

are you still having an active herpes recurrence? you very well could be. I'd avoid sex if your partner is hsv2 negative.  take another ob dose of acyclovir and go from there. sometimes you get back to back ob's and sometimes it just takes the body time to heal. you didn't properly treat your ob so it's running its full course :(

Okay, thanks so much.  Is Valtrex the preferred medication for my case type?

Hi, depends what  you were taking. for Valtrex would be below per Terri Warren:
1. recurrent outbreaks 2 grams twice in one day 12 hours apart and its no longer necessary to rtake this for more than one day for the greatest benifit. Or take 500 mg twice a day for 3 days.

2. suppression: 1000 mg once a day for more than 10 outbreaks per year or 500 mg once a day for those having 9 or less. Doses are taken every day.
