You already have the virus in the nerve ganglia that services your entire oral area. You aren't spreading it inside your mouth and making it worse.
Yes when you have active herpes lesions your child should not be kissing you or sharing drinks/food with you. Make a game out of it - when momma has a lip boo boo you have to kiss like the movie stars do ( overly exaggerated air kisses to both sides of the face type kisses ). That way your child isn't taught to fear cold sores while at the same time being taught that they are contagious and you just have to work around them. Nothing like a game to help a child learn :)

Thanks so much for your insight on this. I woke up this morning to a completely swolen lip. Went straight to the doctor and he gave me 4 pills of valtrex 2 for this morning to 2 for this evening so hopefully within a few days they will be gone?!?!?
Sounds like you are starting them too late to do much good :( Why not ask for a prescription so you can have some on hand to start the next time at the very first sign of a possible cold sore? They work best that way.

I think you are right. I don't know that much has changed over night since taking the medicine. How long with the blisters stay on my lip? Any idea? I am suppost to go see family this weekend I just don't know if I should, I would hate to pass this on. But I guess as long as I don't kiss anyone they will be ok!
It's family - just tell them you can't kiss anyone right now because you have the cold sore to end all cold sores going on. Doesn't mean you can't visit them - just they have to do movie star kisses too ;) Let your daughter teach them how it's done...he he he
Try holding ice to the lip several times a day. That should help the swelling go down somewhat.
