Herpes exposure - hsv1

I've been with my girlfriend who is hsv1+ for a while and I am hsv1-.

We live together and she gets an outbreak about once a year.   We engaged in heavy kissing / oral sex for a few consecutive days with chapped lips.

36 hours after the contact, she felt the familiar tingling and a cold sore appeared a few hours later.     All contact we had was before the cold sore appeared and at least a solid day before any prodrome symtoms started.

I've read conflicting information that say that she was more likely to be shedding the virus during this time, and others that say that prodrome only lasts a few hours or a day, and never several days.

Was this exposure very high risk?

Thank you

That's when the viral load will be at its greatest and most potent.

It's impossible to say with any certainty if the virus was present. However 36 hours it's about 50/50. Now that being said most exposures when the virus is shedding will not lead to transmission. What I'm saying is she sheds the virus at least 10% of days so this exposure isn't any riskier than any other day.

Bless you for all that you do.   So I guess the only way the risk is heavily elevated is during a prodrome or when a lesion is present?
