Anal Herpes

I was recently diagnosed with Herpes (blood test is pending).  I have the usual bumps on the penis area, I also have a sore throat, and my lymphnodes seem to be swollen and or sore.  I also told my doctor about anal irritation, and he quickly glanced in the area but noticed nothing unusual.  It's extremely irritated, especially when I have a bowel movement.  It now appears to be red around the anal area as if I have a rash, and I have what appears to be a lesion or something on the inside of my anal area (it's just barely on the inside).  Is this all part of having herpes?  My doctor prescribed Valtrex, and it seems to be helping, but do I need to go back in for this?  Will this go away soon with the medication?

If it's herpes it will soon be getting significantly better. If it's not then symptoms will stay the same and will need additional follow up.  It could easily be due to yeast or bacteria.  It's not unusual to have more than just herpes going on at the same time ( as if herpes wasn't enough eh? ).

Meanwhile you can try things like soaking in the tubby. epsom salts or aveeno bath sprinkled in are often helpful.  You can also pick up some tucks pads and use them as a compress several times a day ( the entertainment value of trying to walk around with the thing stuck in between your butt cheeks for 10 minutes is helpful too...he he he ).  You can also try sprinkling some cornstarch based powder ( or cornstarch ) in between your bum cheeks too to help cut down on moisture and friction.  A barrier cream can also be soothing like a&d, zinc oxide, bag balm etc.  I'd start with the tubby soaks and the tucks and see how that goes.

Thank you, I'm still very worried, it seems to be getting less irritated, but I have a red rash around the anal area, and some skin seems to be flaking off.  It is also extremely irritated just on the inside of the anal area.  Is all of this normal as well?  Will it all go back to looking normal when I'm done with this 7 day course?

If it's due to herpes it will go away with the medication. If a few days after you finish your 7-10 day course of valtrex it's still the same - return to your provider for a further work up.  You can have herpes lesions in the anal area - it's a fairly normal area for ob's.
