If you have a cold sore, is it possible to give yourself genital herpes?

I was just curious if it that was possible, I've looked this up quite a bit and have found some conflicting findings. I've found most people saying once you've developed a cold sore after a while your body develops antibodies which make you immune to reinfection in other areas(such as the genitals). While others (very few) have basically said "no, that's nonsense you can transmit it" . I'm a MAJOR hypochondriac and was hoping you fabulous people could clarify this for me. Thank you very much.
