Impossible???

My OBGYN just told me that I have tested positive for HSV2 (she said the number of antibodies in my blood indicate that I am infected with herpes). I didn't even know I was being tested (and I didn't think I'd have a reason to!); the test was done as part of my annual routine check up. I have been married for 13 years, and I have not had any sexual relationships outside of my marriage. My husband claims he hasn't either; however, both of us have had various sexual relations prior to our marriage (but again, it's been 13 years!). I have NEVER had any symptoms of herpes, and I am totally shocked by the test results. Here are my questions:
1. Is it possible to have been infected with herpes for more than 13 years without ever having had any symptoms?
2. If yes, is it likely that I will ever get any symptoms, or is the virus "dead"?
3. I have 3 healthy children; have I not been tested for herpes during those pregnancies?
4. How come the virus wasn't detected any earlier??? Is this a brand new test that is being performed nowadays?
5. Should my husband get tested? If yes, what should we do if he is negative? Just keep having sex? And what if he is positive, or maybe even has been for years?
Please know that your time and your answers will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First:  You need to get the numeric results of your herpes test. It's possible that the numbers reflect a false positive, especially since you've never believed you've had symptoms. Grace and some of the other regular posters here can interpret those results for you so call the doc and get the actual numbers from her.

1.  It's possible to go for years without symptoms, or never have any symptoms.

2.  No way to know if you will get symptoms or not. Perhaps you have had symptoms already that you just didn't know were due to herpes: itching, tingling or burning, shaving "cuts,"  or whatever. If you don't know you have herpes, you aren't going to attribute unusual symptoms to it.

3. Grace will have the answer to this.

4.  It sounds like nobody ever tested you before now. It's interesting that the test was done, because it's usually never part of an annual screen.

5. The husband can get tested, but is it really going to matter if he's negative? Christ on crutches, you've been married 13 years. Would you really want to change your behavior at this point if you end up being a "discordant" couple? Who cares? Obviously, that's a decision the 2 of you would have to make together, though.

The first thing you need to do is get the numeric results of your tests. It's possible you have a false positive.
