I have genital herpes - what next?

I have genital herpes (was infected 3 weeks ago) - I have all the symptoms (except blisters)...next step would be seeing a dermatologist and getting a prescription for Valtrex I assume?

If you review grace's profile she tells you in there that she has both HSV-1 and HSV-2.  She has been dealing with HSV for a number of years and a moderator on ASHA's forums.  She is also in the medical field.  However, she isn't an MD.

the only symptoms I got within the first 10-14 days was extreme fatigue...around day 30 is when I started to get weird sensations in my lower body (muscle twitching, occasional tingling/pinching sensation in the groin area, sore hips, discharge)...though Dr.HHH says these are not related to genital herpes  and the risk from genital-to-genital contact is almost none and I shouldn't worry.

my post to Dr.HHH:

thank you!!!

I counting down the days until my 2-10 (or 14) days are up so that I can relax about this more.  I appreciate your help!

Just out of curiosity.... are you an RN, MD?  or how do you know so much about HSV?  I think it's great that you offer so much advice on this community forum!

THANK YOU!

nothing you've said changes why I said what I said.

Hi Grace,

Do you feel that what you said is true for females as well?   I am a female who had genital to genital rubbing about 4 days ago with a man who told me AFTER that he is positive.  He did not have a breakout at the time....although the rubbing was limited, it still has made me very nervous.

thoughts?  THANK YOU!

this really doesn't sound like herpes going on.

you can get herpes from genital rubbing but overall the risk is very low.

see your provider and get a proper work up done.   your regular doctor is the best place to start, not a specialist .

if you've never had herpes testing done before, get a baseline herpes igg blood test done now too.

I'm 100% positive

I was exposed to someone who is positive for herpes a little over 30 days ago (no intercourse, but there was genital-to-genital rubbing)

2 days later i became extremely fatigued, especially in my lower body.

20 days have passed and i've noticed:
- Slight sensations in my thighs
- Occasional pinching on the tip of my penis
- Burning sensation on my scrotum
- The lymph nodes under my arm pits and near my waist are swollen
- I'm still feeling tired, my legs and buttocks are sore

Since there are no visible signs yet, and blood testing would not be 100% accurate, I still feel I should see a physician...dermatologist or urologist? - and ask for a prescription?

No way to self-diagnose. Quite honestly, if your symptoms lack blisters, there's a good chance it's something other than herpes. What symptoms do you have?

In the absence of any symptoms that can be swabbed/cultured, you'd have to get an IgG type specific blood test. You could be tested now but it would only tell you your status prior to this encounter; otherwise, testing at the 3 month mark from the time you think you were infected is when you'd get an accurate test based, on this encounter.
