Just diagnosed...

I just got home from a doctor appointment and was told I have genital herpes.  Needless to say, I'm pretty much a huge emotional wreck right now over this news.

This morning, I was getting out of the shower and noticed under my foreskin (I'm uncircumcised) a number of red patches.  Couldn't see any blisters or anything, but when I dabbed some white distilled vinegar on the red spots (apart from burning) I could clearly see some white circular blister-looking lesions.  I really can't believe this is happening to me.

I've been in a monogamous relationship for more than six months now.  Towards the beginning of our relationship, I accidentally transferred oral HSV1 to my girlfriend genitally.  Last week, we went to have unprotected sex (like we normally have) and she complained of some pain.  EVERYTHING I've read has stated that if you have oral HSV1, then you can't get it genitally.  Total and complete BS.  Looking back on it, the pain she described does seem as though she's having an outbreak.

I don't know what to do now that I have HSV1 both orally and genitally.  Feel absolutely and completely filthy and can't stand being in my own skin right now.  What does this mean now?  Can I never have unprotected sex again? Should I go on the meds (Valtrex) that my doctor prescribed?  I hear it's highly toxic and if that's the case, I'd rather just have this run its course naturally.

Sorry for venting at the same time of trying to explain my situation, but I'm very upset by all this right now...Thanks for hearing me out...

Hi Life360,

Sorry for the multiple responses, but this is really getting to me today.  Anyway, I'm beginning to wonder whether my doctor's physical examination is indeed accurate.

I saw a response from Dr. Hansfield on here saying that herpes symptoms to not demonstrate themselves as a red rash.  What I'm wondering is if what I have is thrush?  I've been examining myself all day and not including the vinegar test I did this morning, there are two red patches that are not raised, nor do I see any blisters or anything like that.  The redness also seems to have died down a little bit, but it's still very obvious and still very much there.

I haven't had sex since Friday and I know that my gf will periodically get yeast infections.  I know she's in the midst of an HSV1 genital outbreak, but I think we've had sex like this in the past while she was having an outbreak without any issue.

I'm just confused and looking for definitive answers.  My doctor took the swab test, but I didn't necessarily have anything "oozing" out of my skin.  He did rub rigorously along the red patches though.  I should have the results back by Friday.

Also, I'm taking the Valtrex as directed by my doctor for the time being.  Maybe it hasn't hit me yet, but I've not experiences the fatigue, fevers, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, etc.  Just red patches of skin beneath the foreskin.

Any additional insight would be helpful.  Thanks.

Is the swab test reliable?  If it's negative, is it likely this is something else?

Yes.  I've been tested recently (as was my gf).  We both tested positive for HSV1, but negative for HSV2.  I tested positive for HSV1 years ago, but that was because I had had a cold sore at one point that I clearly remember.  I never, EVER had a genital issue until today.

The doctor did a swab test of my penis this morning during my appointment.

Have you been tested for herpes?

Meaning is there anything beyond just blisters and sores that can happen?  Does it compromise my immune system?  Will I scar from these ulcers?  Am I guaranteed to get recurrent outbreaks if I have HSV1?  Can this impact any other aspect of my general health?  Will my kids get it if my gf and I one day get married and have children?

Talk to your doctor about alcohol and valtrex. What do you mean the long term consequenses?

I'm getting the prescription filled. As I indicated above, my gf and I both have HSV1. I just don't know what the long term consequences are for me. This disease makes me feel so gross right now and don't know if other than feeling dirty, if herpes will affect me in other ways. I hear if you take valtrex and continue to drink alcohol, you'll cause irreparable liver and kidney damage.

Hi, i would take the medication as the doctor prescribed. You can have unprotected sex again if the other person is also positive. Many people with this prefer a partner with it as makes life easier.
Was a swab done of the lesion?
