HERPES

My niece just found out she  has genital herpes. She is 20 and this just showed up on here. She has been feverish, and not feeling well with swollen glands around the pubic area...she went for treatment but is very devistated like all of us are. I had a question about having children with herpes??/ If she would get an outbreak whild pregnant will it affect the child and is it real dangerous for the baby? She is very worried about her future mother hood...thanks

Her risk of transmitting the virus to her baby during delivery is very small. No obvious lesions a tthe time of delivery and the risk is less than 1%. If she'd have an obvious lesion at the time of delivery then a c section will be performed.

The herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com is a terrific resource for your neice. It's free to read online or print out at home.  There is also a terrific patient counseling video on the site too if her provider didn't already give her the valtrex packet that has it in.
