Prodome

I was diagnosed with hsv2 by igg last year.  I have had 3 outbreaks that I know of, but since I have not been sexually active in over 3 years, it was a big surprise.  The last week I have had lower back/hip pain and a generally tired feeling all over, almost like the flu without the respiratory symptoms, and Im definitely cranky!  Last night, I felt a lesion erupting.  Im a nurse and have read about prodome, the lower back and hip pain I thought were just from gardening and bike riding until the lesion erupted.  Is this the usual prodome pattern? I was given acyclovir by my PCP but since I do not have frequent outbreaks and am not sexually active (and the way I feel today, cannot even imagine becoming so anytime soon), I have not taken the medication. My whole attitude is negative and I feel a bit depressed.  Is this also part of the syndrome.  Thank you for your answers.

If I tried to lift a motorcycle, I'd be in a full body cast to recover....lol.

Soaking in the bathtub with epsom salts thrown in is good for those body aches as well as for herpes. Take a glass of wine with you and you get even more "medicinal" help....he he he

feel free to come weed my garden for me!!

Thanks for your reply.  I am already feeling better, the back pain and lesion is subsiding.  I also was getting a cramping pain intervaginally, almost like a pms, and my legs/thighs were actually painful to touch.  Probably heavy gardening and lifting an 800 lb motorcycle contributed, I am really hating herpes, but Im really glad you are here.  Marian

recurrences usually are not accompanied by this varied of symptoms. odds are you did over do it or are fighting off some other infection and because your immune system is busy doing so, you had a recurrence.

acyclovir works best if you start it as soon as you start feeling the signs of a recurrence. If you want this to heal faster, start the acyclovir now. the easiest dose for recurrences is 800mg 3x/day for 2 days. It heals recurrences at the same rate as the 400mg 3x/day for 5 day dose and is just easier to remember to take.
