Neo-Natal Herpes Type 1 - Possible Transmission

Dr.Handsfield,

As a young boy I had cold sores on my lip and some in my teen years; have not seen any in many years.  Along time ago (I think 16 years ago - in my late twenties) my dermatologist cultured a rash the top of my knee, it was a small straight line, it did itch; but not hurt, the test showed positive for type 1 herpes. He said this was very rare; and gave me some cream, 3 years later it came back in exact same spot; it has never returned.   I have read that herpes below the waist is genital herpes although aside from some jock itch, I have never had these types of “knee” or “lip” blisters in my genital region.  Given all I read, that you may not know you have the virus, I thought I should take a blood test…..this was a few years later. The test indicated positive for type I and negative for type 2, this was a specific test called "herpesselect" immunoblot according to my doctor.  He indicated this was normal.  My concern is that if I do have oral or genital herpes or even both; could I spread this to my wife (she too had cold sores as a child) and because she is pregnant; we do not want to expose our child to Neo-Natal herpes, or even possibly in the future if we have more children. I have told my wife about my "knee" herpes and she think's I am a little overly concerned. Any advice is greatly appreciated.  Thank you again doctor

This is not HHH's forum. You have to pay to post there.

Your wife having hsv1 herself means she's unlikely to contract hsv1 elsewhere - I know, I know - but it happened to you but you really are the exception and not the rule.  This isn't really something to be too concerned about. if you should have a reoccurence of your herpes on the knee, avoid sex until it's healed just to err on the side of caution but otherwise she's well protected.
