Valtrex - transmission

Does Valtrex have to build up in your system for a few days to be effective against transmission or does it start working immediately?  Do I have to take meds everyday to be completely effective?  My partner lives out of state and I rarely see him.

Hi Grace (thank God for you).  I did take another test (my 4th) and the results came back at 1.14.  I am going to wait another month and get a Western Blot.  I might try the Bio-kit too.  Thanks.

500mg daily would be fine.

Have you looked into confirmatory testing as I've suggested in the past? Why even take medication if you don't really need it?

i have a similar question relating to taking acicolvir; i also see my partner intermittently- every 3 months, and only ever get symptoms when i am with him (presumably stress of flying as he is abroad, sex as a trigger etc) . Ive started to take acicolvir about a week before i see him - what  happened once is i still got the initial burning/redness and cant have sex, but this didnt turn into sores or pain wehen urinating which i had before. However, on one occasion i missed one or two doses and still did get the full outbreak - is it possible that missing one or two doses despite taking it for a week befor ethat could have an effect??

Sorry, another question... I have not had another break-out since mild initial episode in mid-December.  I am testing at 1.14 at 3 months.  Will I be okay taking 500mg daily for suppressive therapy or do I need to take 1g Valtrex for this?  I didn't want to take Valtrex until I had another episode to confirm diagnosis, but I do need to protect my partner.  Thanks so much for your time.

You can do episodic suppressive therapy.  Start it at least 5 days before you are to see your partner and continue on it daily while you are with your partner.  In between if you don't wish to take it then don't. I wouldn't mess around with every other day medication. It doesn't work that way for starters and would pretty much be a waste of time to take it every other day.

Yes, you should start taking it 3-5 days before you see your partner and take it as prescribed through the duration of your time together.

I don't think this is recommended, but I'm not sure I'd be compliant in a situation like yours during the times I was away from the partner. I don't generally use medication unless I have a negative partner, so I would find it kind of annoying to have to take the stuff constantly when I'm going for long stretches between having sex.  Maybe you can back off of it to an every-other-day schedule between the times you see the person, then ramp it back up 5 days before you see them. JMO, though.
