equivocal hsv-2 result

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting to any forum. I'm extremely confused & worried and am hoping I can receive guidance through posting. I recently had unprotected sex (biggest mistake I've made to date..still can't get over it) and got tested Tuesday (5 days later). I got my result today (Thursday). Everything was negative, however, I got equivocal results for HSV-2 (1.04). My physician advised me to re-test in one week, but I am very concerned and freaking out. What are the chances of receiving an equivocal result about a week after an unprotected sexual encounter and then receiving a positive result?

I read up a lot on different forums today, but I'm worried sick and cannot focus on anything else. Is there a chance I was exposed but may be still negative? Or am I most likely positive?

Any help, guidance, or further reference would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm so nervous and can't stop thinking about it.

Thank you so much.

don't repeat your testing in a week. You need to wait 3 months after the encounter to repeat your testing. testing before that is just wasting your time and money.

You can get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia anytime after 1 week post encounter. You need to wait 6 weeks for testing for syphilis. 3 months for herpes and hiv. since this was unprotected sex, it's probably well worth testing for the whole shebang but it needs to be done at the proper times or it's not worthwhile.

should you develop any genital symptoms before those times, be seen for testing. Overall the risk of a std from a one time encounter is very low so try not to worry too much until the time has passed for all your testing.
