how are cold sores / HSV-1 spread?

Hello everyone

I have a question regarding how are cold sores / HSV-1 spread besides the obvious, kissing.

My roommate has a cold sore, and as i have never had a cold sore, i would like to keep it this way.

So i am wondering if it is possible to contract the virus from him without any kissing/touching/anything sexual. Like for instance, from something common around the house hold like a tv remote, or a game console remote that we both touch and use everyday.

We do not share towels, but we do have 1 towel in the bathroom that we both use to wipe our hands dry after washing, does this pose a risk / chance for infection?

Is there something else that could strike as a risk for contamination that i/he/we should be aware of? And also what are the best steps to take to make sure the virus doesn't spread to me, or anyone else who doesnt have HSV-1?

I asked him, and he said as long as there is no kissing/contact i am safe (we are not gay), but as we both are not really sure, we hope someone who has experience and knowledge could chime in and help us.

Thank you

Thank you very much for your quick response.

And sorry if i came off a bit rude, i was in no way making him feel as a threat. Him having a cold sore does not bug me at all, i was just curious to see/konw if it was indeed possible to contract it (if i dont have it) from other means than kissing.

You don't need to worry about contracting HSV1 unless you intend to kiss this person while he has an active cold sore going on .... HSV1 is very much a state of normality for a large percentage of people around 80% of the population have it .... and you have to realise that he's not the only person you have daily contact with  ..... so please don't stigmatis by making him feel like a threat in this way thats just not nice !! ...... Also unless you have been tested you can't know for certain that you or any of the others in the house don't already have it anyways lack of symptoms is not a guaranteed indication that you don't .....
Do some research and educate yourself on both HSV1 and HSV2 so that you have a greater understanding of the condition ....
