Confusion over diagnosis

I had my first herpes outbreak last week, and went to a clinic to have everything tested.  They performed a culture.  They called today with the results, and told me that I had both Type 1 and Type 2.

I don't understand how both types could have caused the outbreak.  I know that you can contract both.  I also know that if you perform a blood test for herpes when the sores aren't actually present, some of the older tests tend to confuse the antibodies for Type 1 and Type 2.  But since they performed a culture on the sores, they should be able to tell me which type was causing them, correct?  Does anyone have some words of wisdom?

i think the trouble was the nitwit nurses at planned parenthood.  when i picked up the test results, they said very clearly that it was positive for HSV1 and negative for HSV2.

jessi, huge thanks to you and to grace for your help!

I would call and ask for clarification on this.  Did they do more than one culture?

Its possible, but not common, to get both types genitally.
